FL Div 10: Cortown crushed by superior Syddan

April 24, 2024

Cortown's David Rispin

Cortown 0-5 Syddan 1-19

Cortown were swept aside by a rampant Syddan side on a beautiful Spring evening on Tuesday night. The hosts had no answer to a Syddan side who have been railroading everyone and everything in their wake up to this and are likely to continue to do so for the remainder of the Competition in truth.

Syddan played against the tricky first half breeze but made hay nonetheless with Gary McManus, Eoghan Dillon and veteran Gary Farrelly all registering early points. Aston Villa fan Stephen Fitzmaurice raised Cortown’s first white flag of the evening with a sublime long range effort, one which his idol John McGinn would be proud of.

Some stout defending from youngsters Aaron Smith and Ronan McGuirk did help to keep the dominant visitors at bay for a time but they eventually extended their league. Davy Rispin notched a hattrick of points in quick succession to narrow the deficit but a superb Gary McManus goal on the stroke of half time effectively put the contest beyond Cortown at the interval, 0-4 to 1-11.

Syddan introduced more first team pedigree at the beginning of the second half and completely dictated the tempo for the remainder. Cortown, whilst wasteful, could only muster one more free for the rest of the game from Rispin.

It was a chastening experience for Cortown against a team who ought to be in a higher division than this but were mightily impressive nonetheless. Cortown are back in first team action this Sunday morning against Summerhill with the reserve team returning to action next Tuesday against St Pat’s – both home fixtures.
