A Mark Rodgers ‘65’ in the fifth minute of injury-time saw Clare clinch a dramatic 4-21 to 2-26 victory over Waterford this afternoon in the Munster senior hurling championship.
Played in glorious conditions at a packed Cusack Park in Ennis, both teams served up a cracker that saw the hosts leading by 2-13 to 0-14 at the halfway stage thanks to the goals of Darragh Lohan and David Fitzgerald.
After Rodgers added the Banner men’s third goal early in the restart, Waterford moved up through the gears eventually and got things level after a Stephen Bennett goal was backed up by a Dessie Hutchinson free.
All in all, the sides would be level half a dozen times in this provincial thriller and the last occasion looked to be enough for Davy Fitzgerald’s men to earn a share of the spoils.
Trailing by three, the Deise men got a penalty in the second minute of injury-time which Shane Bennett blasted to the net but there’d still be time for a winner and it was Rodgers that provided it with the last puck to clinch Clare’s second win in this year’s Mick Mackey Cup race.
