O'Byrne Cup: Barry the Laois hero

December 14, 2019

Laois' Mark Barry.

Laois 1-12

Wexford 1-11

Debutant Mark Barry grabbed a late winner as Laois bounced back from their O'Byrne Cup first round defeat to Offaly to edge out Wexford in Enniscorthy.

With former Kerry team-mates Mike Quirke and Paul Galvin in opposite dugouts, the hosts looked to have snatched a share of the spoils when top-scorer Colm Feeney netted in the second minute of injury-time, but there was still time for Barry to win it for Laois with the last kick of the game.

The result leaves Galvin still awaiting his first win as Wexford manager after they also went down to Westmeath in the opening round at the same venue seven days ago.

Veteran Ross Munnelly converted a pair of frees to give the O'Moore County an early lead before Wexford rallied with scores from Feeney and Ben Brosnan to take a three-point lead. But further scores from Munnelly and Diarmuid Whelan along with a well-taken goal by Barry sent Laois into the break with a 1-7 to 0-6 lead.

Wexford kicked three unanswered points midway through the second half to narrow the gap, but they didn't regain parity until stoppage-time when Feeney goaled, only for Barry - who scored 1-3 in an impressive debut - to have the final say.
