There is sadness in Roscommon football circles at the passing of Tony Whyte.

The Clann na nGael club stalwart gave a lifetime of service to the GAA as a player, coach, manager, club officer and historian. He lined out at left half forward on the Roscommon team that lost the 1962 All-Ireland SFC final to Kerry and late managed the Rossies to Connacht SFC titles in 1977 and ’78, a National League title in ’79 and an All-Ireland SFC final appearance against Kerry in ’80.

With his beloved Clann, he won six county SFC medals, three as captain in 1961, ’66 and ’70. He also guided the Johnstown-based outfit to Connacht Club SFC successes in 1982 and ’84.

In addition, he served as Clann chairman and secretary, and compiled the club’s history to coincide with the GAA’s centenary in 1984.
