Peter Keane wasn't surprised that Meath pushed his Kerry side all the way in Killarney.

The Royals look destined for a quick return to Division 2 after suffering their fourth straight defeat, but their performance against last year's All-Ireland runners-up will give them hope for the rest of the season.

"It was a struggle. We went up to Navan last year in the Super 8s and we struggled enough against them," the Kerry manager explained to the Irish Daily Star.

"We beat them by 10 points in the end, but it didn't feel like that on the day, it was tight.

"Meath are a good team, well managed, well structured, they fought well for everything they got. They are no bad team.

"I know they're in a situation where they've lost four games, but were people coming here expecting us to beat these fellas by 20 points? I certainly didn't come to the game thinking that."
