The Corona Virus And Possible Effects To GAA Matches - 9 Like(s)

Replying To cavanman47:  "So you're a frontline healthcare worker who thinks the notion that people will die from the virus are over the top?? I take it you don't work in the ICU dept of any of our major hospitals then? Oh, and I hope you never do!"
Thanks for your kind remarks. You can read as much as you like into comments I make, it's completely up to you. People die every day from many different causes and I have seen my share. I dont at all underestimate the danger of Covid 19 but if it makes you feel good or superior to think that I do that's fine.

Replying To eoinog:  "Another spiel in the Sunday Independent from this author. Coming hot on the heels on the Athenry story while hardly deserved 2 pages I am wondering what is his point. These stories are a million miles away from drug cheats that he normally covers and does well."
Running out of big stories to cover so has to blow up some smaller ones to seem relevant. Besides, anything that might portray the GAA in a negative light is deemed worthwhile covering by his employers.

The Corona Virus And Possible Effects To GAA Matches - 6 Like(s)

Replying To cavanman47:  "What's wrong with what he/she said? GAA members include those who are elderly or have underlying conditions which leaves them vulnerable to the virus. GAA members have died this year because of Covid-19 and more will likely die because of it too unfortunately."
People are just losing the run of themselves. I am a frontline healthcare worker exposed to the possibility of getting the virus every day but life must go on. I am neither for nor against the GAA championship going ahead but Nphet have allowed for it to occur. This latest thing of 13 Offaly players being deemed close contacts indicates that someone somewhere has changed the rules for GAA activity, possibly as a consequence of the irresponsible behaviour and bad publicity that occurred following some club finals. There may well be a certain amount of vengefulness involved in the decision.

Galway V Limerick - 6 Like(s)

Replying To MicktheMiller:  "It got a bit intense at times today, Limerick gave away a lot of frees, 12 to 4 at one stage in first half, but Galway stood up to Limerick, and got the deserved win. They showed it is possible to beat Limerick."
Terrible whinging from Kiely in his post match interview. Most undignified...thought he was better than that. Basically accused Galway of diving and cheating and fooling the ref but in some verbal gymnastics added that they deserved to win!

Your county win the All Ireland or Ireland win the Euros... which? - 5 Like(s)

Replying To waynoI:  "100% Cue. Cant stand Ireland in the soccer. Just cant. With their Scottish/English accents. Not one word of Irish between the majority of them. Nah, Not for me. A very unpopular opinion but I don't care. Roll on the euros, But wont be watching the Ireland games with any kind of bias towards them. As a Liverpool fan, I'd like to see England do well though with Milner, Henderson, Sturridge, Lallana and Clyne all in the squad. But yea rant over anyway... Dubs will always come first. So Sam > Euros."
Now that is a mentality I will not ever understand. Dislikes the national team because of their foreign accents but supports Liverpool a foreign team. The men of 1916 died for nothing.

2021 Rankings So Far - 5 Like(s)

Replying To McGo72:  "After there convincing win against Sligo yesterday I would have to say Mayo should be a lot higher in my rankings"
Why? Did they beat a team of note? Sligo didn't even field a team in the Connacht championship last year. They might as well have been playing Kilkenny footballers.

Replying To mightydubs:  "Can't say how happy i am to see mayo caught out, they where cleaned out in midfield and bar durcan and moran they where hopeless, hopefully that'll be that with that team. Where was Keegan tonight"
Sounds like you have experienced a lot of losses to Mayo. When a victor is vindictive it says a lot about the kind of person they are.

Replying To foreveryoung:  "Not a judgement but a fact. 10 points in hurling is a fair ould bating. Now you can go into the reasons for it all you like, but it stíl won't narrow the margin down from 10 points of a fair ould bating."
And wont change the fact that your knowledge of gaelic games is rather limited too. A chap that on the football predictions thread who thought inter-county league games were of 60 minutes duration. Enough said.

No Red Thumbs - 5 Like(s)

Replying To KillingFields:  "What age are you? 12 maybe? People hid behind red thumbs. Couldnt or wouldnt post a reply to a persons post so just red thumbed the post. How does it take from the forum? If you were to keep the red thumbs you should have to post in a pop up form why you dislike the post and that reason should be available to the original poster and moderators. But if not that then keep them off the site"
Now to be honest, if I were to guess at who is the 12 year old between you and the other poster based on your opinion on green and red thumbs, I would pick you!! A person would need to be an extremely sensitive adult or else a child to get upset about getting red thumbs or to feel good about themselves for getting green thumbs. The idea that red thumbs stifle debate is the most ludicrous thing I've heard in a long time. If a person is that sensitive and is afraid to post in case they might get a red thumb, really they would be better advised to stop posting entirely and keep off internet forums while they are at it. By the way, on this post of mine I know you will be giving me a big metaphorical red thumb. No problem. I can cope.

Can the GAA survive the Rugby onslaught - 4 Like(s)

Replying To tonydoranfan:  "[quote=janesboro:  "[quote=hill16no1man:  "[quote=janesboro:  "tonydoran fan .... New zealand tour Europe to make money!!!!!!!!!! Why was the match in Chicago????? The try and tap into the American cash cow, would you please wake up!!! correct - -same reason dublin played galway in fenway park same reason new york get a championship game each year - money - same reason the gaa are introducing the super 8, -Money -"
Yeah but nobody in the gaa tries to make out they are big important games like our rugby folks tell us they aren't challenge games for their equivalent. I didn't even watch the dublin Galway challenge game in America."]to rugby people they are important games i mean look at the emotion on the players faces after beating the all blacks,"]Would ireland please go and beat the all blacks in a world cup .. Then we can have something to talk about, not some over hyped autumn money making challenge match in the USA... Fair dues to the rugby guys in fairness in leading the brainless to believe that these matches really mean something!!! Bit like wexford beating kilkenny in a spring challenge match then hammered in the summer championship"]Hope you're consistent and judge the International Rules games by the same measure. In the greater scheme of things they may be regarded as meaningless games but every GAA player who has ever played in them considered them very meaningful and regarded it as a great honour to represent their country.

All Ireland Club Final, Kilmacud V Glen (Derry) - 4 Like(s)

Replying To Past hurler:  "It's tainted now for Crokes, if they keep the cup nobody will respect them as All Ireland club winners, people don't anyway. Big asterisk beside Crokes win forevermore , so if they keep the cup they will be a seen as as the team who cheated to win an All Ireland. Glen just wanted to highlight both the cheating of Kilmacud and also the inept GAA head honcho's. I've a feeling the Glen will let Kilmacud keep their tainted All Ireland."
No, not at all tainted for Crokes. But tainted in your eyes and in the eyes of people who dont like Crokes. But I'd say they'll be quite fine with that!

US Based Galway Hurler Overturns Ban - 4 Like(s)

Replying To OpenStand:  "Reading the home page i see a galway club player who flew home from Boston to line out with his club in a senior hurling relegation final was given a 48 week ban for not self isolating for 14 days prior to game. He appealed to Connacht council and got it overturned. Most clubs cant get fellows to come from college in a neighboring city to play a match ! Whilst i get the covid piece and all that but playing in the open air would negate a lot of mine and most peoples concerns. He set up a construction firm in Boston and sponsers his club team at home in Galway. Its a medal this man should be getting coming home from US to line out with his native parish in such a crucial fixture. "
Where do you stand on Golfgate then? Do you feel sorry for the politicians involved and think it was unfair that so many of them had to resign? Because to be consistent you would need to hold that opinion. This player broke the law of the land by playing in a match without self isolating for the required time...this during the first wave of the pandemic when fear and anxiety about Covid was even higher than it is now. The opposing team objected to his participation on health and safety grounds but the county board did not intervene at that stage...I can understand how he got the suspension overturned on appeal because no GAA rules would have been infringed. The mistake which the objectors made was not bringing the matter to the attention of the gardai in the first place.

Can Gaelic Football (Handball?) Be Saved? - 4 Like(s)
I read through this thread expecting to find a legion of posters strongly rebutting the OP and countering that the game was never in better shape. Surprised to find very little of that here which I take as a sign of hope that there is a groundswell now that recognizes that the game has major problems which need fixing. Point has been made that the All Ireland final this year was an entertaining game (which it was) and also the most watched game of the year. The latter point is not relevant in that people who have no interest at all in gaelic football from one end of the year to the next will throw an eye on the All Ireland final because it is the All Ireland final (event junkies and all that!). I'd say even in Donegal, Cavan, and Monaghan, the All Ireland hurling final would be put on in lots of homes even though they might not have watched a minute of earlier round games! I was the All Ireland football final 2 years ago, Galway vs Kerry (another good game) but was struck by the number of times during the game where the crowd was completely silent as the handpassing over and back, across and backwards took place. You could almost have heard a pin drop during those short periods of quietness. Never thought I would experience that at an All Ireland final but such is the modern game. Rugby is not my game at all and so far I have only watched 2 games in the current World Cup... Ireland vs South Africa and NZ vs France.... but what humdingers they were from start to finish, and before anyone says they had interludes too, yes they had, but they were needed for both spectators and players to catch their breath. It is a long long time since I saw a gaelic football match that was as engrossing as those 2 games were. As an outsider it seems to me that rugby has done everything to make their game as entertaining as possible , and it is paying dividends with the growing popularity of the game. I'd like to think that the GAA authorities might someday do the same for gaelic football (and also have a look at hurling cos it has room for improvement too imo)

Battling Lockdown - 4 Like(s)
I'm making a massive effort to improve my Irish and get fluent at it if at all possible. I'm working on expanding my vocabulary...systematically studying the O'Donaill dictionary going from "A" to "Z" and getting pronunciations of words I'm unsure of on teanglann.ie or focloir. Also writing down every seanfhocal I come across in the dictionary! If/when I finish at Irish I will move onto Russian! Apart from that I'm doing more exercise than I've done In years. Doing daily walks.....make sure I do a minimum 10k steps per day (usually do a lot more)

Question For Hurling Fans - 4 Like(s)

Replying To Whammo86:  "What do you make of the second tier football proposals? It reeks to me of preferential treatment for football. Bar the first number of years after their inception the hurling lower tier competitions have been run off early in the summer. They been gotten out of the way so that they don't impact on the football counties championships. The promotional effort made for these competitions is to my knowledge pretty sparse. I'm very firmly a football man but it still annoys me how hurling is an afterthought on a lot of occasions. Maybe I'm just getting grumpy in my old age."
Strange question to be putting to hurling fans...what do we think of the second tier football proposals. Basically as a hurling man, I don't have any opinion! How football wants to organise itself should be up to football people to decide. If your point is about the second tier football being given more respect and status than its hurling equivalent, yes well that's pretty much inevitable since in most counties where football is weak it is still the no.1 sport whereas there is no county outside the top tier in hurling where hurling is the no.1 sport and it is usually well down the pecking order in terms of participation and interest. But should the McDonagh/Ring/Rackard/Meagher competitions be given more exposure and be promoted better? Absolutely. The finals of these competitions should be curtain raisers to big McCarthy Cup matches. But if county boards in football dominated counties have antipathy or apathy towards hurling within their counties (as many do) then the possibility of promoting the game and giving it a higher status is practically non existent.

Falling Football Attendances - 4 Like(s)

Replying To galwayford:  "Kildare are playing crap football, you lost again yesterday. So bíonn tú ag caint ráiméis. It is a fact that posters from counties like Kildare, Derry and Meath, all second rate, are the biggest critics of football. While Dubs, Kerry, Galway and Mayo are usually the most positive."
Don't like pulling up a fellow countyman but you have been posting a lot of strange and disparaging comments for some time now that have mostly gone unchecked.. Do you have any idea how elitist you come across to others? You're comments regularly fly against that community spirit that is supposed to define the GAA. You have no right to look down on other counties and call them "second rate".
