Éire Og must plan without Shane O'Donnell for Sunday's Clare SHC quarter-final against Kilmaley after the county forward left for America.

The 2013 All-Ireland final replay hat-trick hero jetted off Stateside last weekend to study at the prestigious Harvard University where he was a awarded a Fulbright scholarship as part of his PhD studies in UCC.

O'Donnell will spend six months as a Fulbright student at the Boston university but is expected to return home in time for the 2019 championship.

The 24-year-old was a key figure for Clare as they came within a whisker of reaching the All-Ireland final having lost out to Galway after a replay while he recently received an All-Star nomination for his excellent performances this year.

His move represents a big blow to Éire Og who are chasing their first Canon Hamilton Cup success since 1990.

O'Donnell could link up with the Clare squad for the Super 11's tournament in Boston which take place between November 14th and 18th.
