Tyrone v Cavan - Ulster Semi-Final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Replying To McGiolla:  "The conditions were desperate however some of the shooting was not acceptable or up to standard. Clarke should be played half back as a play maker and runner not in the full forward line. McKiernan did not show up-tightly marked or not-still should contribute to the game. SJ did not look fit and should of been substituted sooner.

McVeety and Mackey showed a bit of class and defensively sound. I taught the ref gave Tyrone some very easy frees in the first half which kept them in the game-gave Cavan very little.

Tyrone looked like a team who was doing some heavy training and looked slow in spells, they were there for the taking. The game yesterday will bring Cavan on to the next step on how to close out big games.

We are getting closer lads-the next day for Cavan to win"
we cant blame conditions as they are same for both teams

Sorry the losers of this match play Carlow at home not Wicklow in the qualifiers. Typo error on my behalf.

Glad to get the draw, mcaveety ,dunne, macky, had great games and givney done well with no support, very disappointed with the management they seemed to forget they had sub's with them at the game, no point having a great panel and putting on sub's in injury time ,Tyrone had 3 on early, our first came with about 10 mins to go that's not good enough, well done to the players do.

Should have freshened up the team with 20 minutes to go. Players dead on feet from effort put in. Galligans kick outs were phenomenal. McVeety and Martin Reilly tried hard. Givney isolated on long ball. Mackey done some nice things. The slip pass for Ciaran Brady for last goal for example. Niall Murray our best player in my opinion.

Watched the BBC coverage last night. Martin McHugh said Raymond Galligan second only to Cluxton in Ireland.

Very surprise at Tyrone at conceded 3 goals. Cavan have put a lot of work into underage but they never took through a forward like MC Manus in Monaghan Cavan don't have forwards that can score points Tyrone to win by 5 points d next day .

Yes we could do with a McManus, but so could a lot of teams there's not too many as good as him a round the country.

Cannot blame the management for high ball tactics,it paid dividends. It is ok for Kerry to use it over the years with Donaghy and for Mayo to use it with A. O'Shea and Donegal to use it with Murphy but not for Cavan to use it.Terry proved by using it that Tyrone are vulnerable which also means they will have to change their team around next day for a change. The high ball may have reaped even more dividend if we had a bit of pace in beside Givney for breaking ball. The place for Killian is midfield on Mattie Donnelly, put big Gearoid out of the centre next day as a wing forward and decide if we play Jack Brady inside or big Michael Argue. Also Jason McLoughlin would be a major help in doing a man marking job on either McCurry,McAllister or O'Neill.

Terry & Co certainly gave Mickey Harte food for thought . Unfortunately when you give Harte a few ingredients he serves a 7 star dish.. The lack of belief & the adaptability needed as the game etches and flows is missing from the Cavan Dugout. Management surely froze from 50th-65th minute & lads lost their positioning.

But I think the next day Tyrone will setup the same they might retreat back & really suffocate the life out of the game. They attacked mercifully yesterday & returned 16 points enough to win any champo match. But until they unearth a new FB expect him to be protected at all costs.Keeper is poor also.

How do Cavan counter this well it wont be easy & you cant teach it. But Terry needs to do one thing. Like chess or attritions of war he does not need to start every jewel . Clarke Johnson & Big G. The game is 70 min your allowed 5 subs. I think if we attack then attack & then freshen up the attack we ll eventually break down the rearguard.

Management setup lovely the last day infact it was funny both side s targeted the FB line as weaknesses. But we made the misjudgement of trying to include everyone in the starting 15 i.e Killian Clarke. At the moment we have 5-6 midfielders & as good as Clarke is you can t make a position for him. Same with SJ hes not fit for a full paced game but with 15 to go he ll cause frees hes cool on the ball & he rises the crowd.

I think any of the 21 at least players could start. We re a better panel than team if that makes sense. We have no corner forward to grab 1-3 but we have the panel to play a very high tempo 70 min.........

Replying To Awwwwnow:  "Actually thought Murray played well yesterday , capping it by scoring a fine point when badly needed. I'd be interested to hear JonSmiths views on the very late substitutions by the management when some players were clearly out on their feet after an energy sapping game . Do you JonSmith agree with the managements decisions to bring on subs in the 35 minute of the 2nd half??? Stupid question really I suppose .. Of course you agree.. Well I don't and furthermore TH got plenty wrong yesterday but 3 soft goals at the right time covered his management."
Agree with you and most of the posts.
Don't agree with poster who said Dunne, Gunner etc should have scored! They are backs.
Needed subs sooner. Fierce lucky that last goal was scored.
Was nothing short of insulting to the subs who were bought in late. Several of our regulars shouldn't have started the 2nd half.

The point I was trying to make was that the wrong men were on the end of the moves and that they were all scoreable chances which were missed because they were backs......
Killian Clarke is best playing as a half back, he was great there in 2013 bombing forward setting up overlaps but someone mentioned about him playing midfield and marking Donnelly which is worth trying if Gearoid can move onto the 40, thought Gearoid was gone with about 15mins to go yesterday and Donnelly skipped past him a few times...

I have no idea what's going down in training but if we are going to persist with the tactics employed yesterday then Keating should start the next day and be sited close to goal with Givney. Leaving just one up there is madness. You need your trigger men close to goal and with the best will in the world Killian Clarke could never be described as a trigger man. If Seanie is to play then he should also be sited close to Givney but on balance I would start Keating ahead of Seanie the next day.

What was amazing about yesterday's game was the number of our key players who did not perform and we still ground out a result. Let's hope that with a better overall performance we can win the day in two weeks time.

Thank you!!

It absolutely baffles me how an "expert" like Spillane can watch the game and come to the conclusion that Cavan got 2 goals from playing the hail mary ball tactic.

1st goal - An overlap led to a goalscoring chance and the rebound was scored
2nd goal - Galligan attempted to score a free kick but it dropped short
3rd goal - the ball was worked in and fisted across the square

Good man '47, someone else gets it!

Cavan lost almost every high ball they played up, the goals had nothing to do with it.
I am all for Cavan playing long early ball against Tyrone, but there is a big difference between a high dropping ball and a pass drilled in early and accurate. The high ball suits Tyrone because it gives them time to swarm the receiver. An early low pass should bypass the half backs quickly and give inside forwards an advantage. They have to get Martin Reilly on the ball to do this.
It would actually benefit Cavan if Tyrone overreact and select big slow players to counter the high ball. But Mickey, unlike the experts, will have read the game correctly.

Seanie is absolutely no threat 45 metres from goals. You either play him off Givney close to goals or you don't play him at all. When Givney won ball he had no one to give it to. I'd actually play Jack Brady and SJ in the full forward line with Givney . If that wasn't working pull Givney out to centre forward and leave a 2 man full forward line with width and pace. Attacking backs need scoring inside forwards to play to, it would limit the wild off the outside of the boot shots by backs. If MCCarron was stretched wide he's venerable. Both Seanie and Jack can take players on coming from the wings if the route 1 football to Givney wasn't working. Very impressed with the turnovers the backs won but still have a tendency to get turned over running into blind alleys mainly because there was no inside forwards to let it in to. When we took them at pavce in the first minute from the wings Givney scored his first goal. Stretch them wide and run at them, they are vulnerable out wide. There very strong coming forward up the middle.

Replying To seanorinn:  "Half time good advertisement for Cavan as a team to watch in the future. I don't think the conditions were conductive to good football. I just could not make out what direction that wind was blowing. I think regarding a dry day I think Tyrone will take a dry day anytime for their game. Odd refereeing decisions I wonder did he leave his black and red card in the dressing room. Another day out in two weeks time one could not ask for anymore now could they. Nice to see my adopted county doing well long may they continue."
so where did you think that the ref should have shown blaclk or red. I thought he had a decent enough game. umpires were a disaster. surely umpires should be raising the green flag if the ball goes over the line. they are right beside it. also they should be calling square balls and 45s.

umpire didn't signal that final 45 until ref told him to. strange old game, in some ways a freak of a game. how we drew a game against Tyrone whilst scoring 5 points from play is anyone's guess. I agree about late late substitutions our management seem to make the correct substitutions and at the correct time when we are winning a game but for some reason they seem reluctant to make them when we are losing.

If you played a two man full forward line of Johnston and Jack Brady against Tyrone you would never score. How did SJ do inside in league final. I'm afraid you really don't have a clue if you think that's a good idea.

In reply to earlier post. Of course Gunner should have scored. He was standing on the 15. Plays midfield a lot for his club.
