Another hard luck story... The game was lost on the line... What was Llyng brought on for and why was McVitty not replaced as he gave away the ball on too many ocasions... He was taken off in a league match when he was our best player.. More ball should have been kicked in on top of Argue as Wylie did not look near fit... It was a missed oppertunity to beat a Monaghan team that were not on top form but instead of pushing on we allowed them get back in the game... One other thing for a team renouned for our defencive play we dont have a player that can tackle without giving away frees... McManus is aclass act and repeated what he done to us 2 years ago..

This one was lost on the line. Management have never learned that when we have the advantage we need to push on. Argue in the square was good but he had nobody playin off him. Dunne and Hayes were brought in far too late to be of any use but both were well capable of playin off him. How a few of that team managed to stay on for as long as they did is questionable . when Monaghan decided to attack 10 mins into the second half our markin was deplorable, and indeed a few of the starters have definitely been there too long and are not able to deliver. Takin off Mc Enroe changed the game in Monaghans favour, but takin off a good player when he is on a yellow seems to be the fastest and most creative decision this management are able to make. They watched Monaghan score 4-5 points unanswered , threw on Mickey Lyng when Reilly was on black??????? Tiresome stuff at this stage I could not bear to watch this management waste our talent any more and take another Cavan team into the Ulster championship again, please, enough is enough. That's it I'm done with Cavan senior football till we see a new fresher creative approach. On a brighter note, minors played nice football, well done there and St Pats success earlier in the year, there's hope .

To be fair the referee was brutal towards us, one touch and McManus is down as if he's been shot, he is a master at deceiving referees, never goes down when he's outside of the scoring zone, waits until he knows he has a kickable free.

But that's not the reason we lost, we lost because the resolve in this team is questionable. The very same thing happened the last time we played against Meath in the league, winning the game mid way through the second half and folded. Today we choked as we lack belief.

Time for a new manager on the line.

I have to say I was happy with Cavan in the first half as we played some great football at times and our interchange of the ball at time cut monaghan open ,we made them look very ordinary. bad points ,we had plenty of cover for most of the frees we gave away and the whole reason for playing football like this is to turn over the ball without giving away frees ,but mc manus was a joke he just kept falling to the ground when he felt players around him and the ref fell for it ,I think we lost this game by not keeping the players fresh ,when Monaghan introduced a few fresh subs ,we were a bit laboured ,we needed fresh legs in at this stage to keep us ahead and not when we went a point down ,so management were far too slow making changes .and this is a trend with the current set up, overall im still happy enough ,we have things we can work on for the next match and I do honestly think Monaghan thought they were coming down to give us a 6 point hammering and I think it was a real eye opener for them ,but they still won so best of luck on the rest of the ulster campaign to them. hoping for a decent back door run now.

Hard luck to the lads yesterday after a great effort . Sick as a parrot after that - we had them on the ropes but couldn't kill them off . In the end their bench won it for them along with the class of McManus . Their subs improved them while ours were probably forced a bit and maybe weakened us . Killian Clarke was a big miss as too were other absentees but no use crying over spilt milk .

Thought the ref killed us a bit especially second half and gave us absolutely nothing while in contrast gave Monaghan free after free . Three things he did really swung the momentum in Monaghan's favour . McVeety was blatantly fouled from behind while going forward on an attack in a scoreable position while we were still 3 points up I think and he gave the free the other way . Monaghan scored from the counter and firmly got the initiative back .
Black card on Martin Reilly was wrong . We couldn't afford to lose him . His dishing out of cards in general to mostly Cavan players didn't help us and put pressure on McEnroe and DJ in defence . If that's the way he wants to rule the game then fair enough but apply the rules to both teams .
The long range free that Galligan missed . The second foul after the advantage happened on the 45 metre line . Why was it brought way back ? Very very poor officiating when the result was on a knife egde .

But in the end we just weren't good enough and lacked belief (and maybe the legs) to press home our advantage . Credit to Monaghan they had the stronger panel and used it accordingly . We panicked a bit when in the driving seat and stopped doing what was reaping dividends . Thought we should have let it into Argue more after his score . The wind was hanging up the ball nicely for him and he looked to have the measure of the full back .

Onto the qualifiers now - hopefully we can build on what was a marked improvement from last year's championship displays . A favourable draw and a win or two would be a nice tonic . Even though we pushed a very good team close some of our lads under performed so there is much room for improvement . Nice to see Ciaran Brady come on and not look out of place . Niall Murray was excellent . But a big shout out to Mossy Corr . Put his body on the line and cut a very inspiration figure out on the pitch . If his heart and desire rub off on a few more of those players then we could be in for a bit of a summer .

I thought McVeety carried the ball well. People see different things at games. McKiernan for me was a surprise on it. Played centre forward for some strange reason and the long ball game caused him to be by-passed.

I asked the same question myself but they had to get 15 you can add McKiernan and McDermott to that as well. If you call Flannagans short hand passes wordy of getting on the team well thats fair enough for he threatened no one. Forgot to check did McEnroe get on it he was the reason Cavan lost the match with 15 minuets to go after those on the side line removing a man that was playing extremely well. I tell you what Hyland and co should be run out of Breffni Park over that stupid decision alone and told don't come back except as a paying spectator. .

For the most part Cavan played well on Sunday but management cost them the match... We have some very good players but as I said before I hope we dont look back at this Hyland era with a lot of regret...but I am afraid we will... To my memory this management have rarely made a sub or positional switch that has had a positive effect for Cavan in any games and to many these guys are makeing progress...!!!!

Watched the whole thing again last night, and on second viewing this was not 'one that got away'. If anything we were lucky not to get beat by more in the end. The reason- Cavan were totally spent after 50 minutes. After that Monaghan could do what they liked.
People are blaming Terry Hyland for not making changes at that stage. Maybe, but the men that needed to come off included Argue, McKiernan and Corr. They were out on their feet long before the whistle. Look again at clerkins point. Mossy Corr is burning oil trying to catch Corey over 40 yards. He runs to a terrible position the ball is switched back and Clerkin has an open chance. For Darren Hughes point nobody has the leads to get near him after McLaughlin pulls out of the tackle. Then at the end, pure cuteness for Monaghan bringing beggan up and then kicking short. But watch what mckiernan and argue do- gearoid trots forward towards the Monaghan 45 totally tuned out. Argue makes a half attempt at tracking back but then stands watching Walshe cut inside for a point before the cover can reach him. Poor,poor stuff when graft was needed most but this will not be mentioned because the 2 lads are on the right side of Cavan supporters sentiment.
whatever about the tactics, I'd be asking why wasn't a team of young men fit enough to stay with a supposedly ageing side for more than 50minutes?

The result was as most people expected, Cavan's performance in the first 45 minutes was better than what most expected, Cavan's performance in the last 25 minutes, was what most people expected, and was what we witnessed throughout the league. It was an Ulster Senior Championship game in Breffni Park, so it was inevitable that Cavan put it up to Mongaghan, but the fact is, Mongahan are a Division 1 side, are a better side, better players and if we were to play them 10 times this year, theyd beat us at least 9 times.
There are two factors why we lost this match -
No1 Poor Management - 4 pts up in the 2nd half, some players were tiring, and our running game during the first 45 minutes was beginning to slow down, fresh legs were needed to up the pace again, wrong substitutions were made.
No2 Players - Some poor decisions - running into tackles allowing Monaghan to turn the ball over and counter attack, some poor passing with the final ball, and only putting 2 long balls into Argue in the 2nd half.

PS Martin Reillys was a black card, he tackled the player around the neck and pulled him down, it was a cynical foul to stop the player from progressing - Martins reaction...he didnt argue with the ref, he knew striaght away what he did.
