Boylan, Rev John

Outside of his illustrious career in the priesthood, renowned missionary Father Jack Boylan, who passed away in Kiltegan, County Wicklow, was known far and wide for his footballing exploits with his native Mullahoran. A star of the Dreadnoughts' golden era, Fr Jack honed his skills at St Mel's College, Longford and was wing forward on the Mullahoran side that shocked Cornafean in the 1942 Cavan SFC final. He went on to win a total of six senior championships and was centre forward on the Cavan team that played Cork in the 1945 All-Ireland final, drafted in late in place of the sick Mick Higgins. Unfortunately, the restrictions placed on clerical studies for the priesthood at the time meant that his intercounty career was cut short, but Fr Jack - who won a McKenna Cup medal with the Breffni County - will be rightly remembered as one of Mullahoran's greatest gaels. A Mullahoran jersey was presented during the offertory procession at his funeral.
