McGrath Cup: Limerick grind out opening win against Clare

Limerick's Iain Corbett celebrates

Limerick 0-14
Clare 2-6

Billy Lee’s Limerick got their new campaign off to a winning start by coming with a successful late surge against Clare in Rathkeale this afternoon.

Danny Neville and Jamie Lee (0-7) notched over the points late on that secured victory for the hosts, with their Banner counterparts having fallen flat in the late stages despite goals in either half from Keelan Sexton.

Sexton’s 23rd minute penalty – awarded after Donal O’Sullivan was adjudged to have brought down Eoin Cleary – had the visitors one in front before a free from Lee at the other end left it at 0-6 to 1-3 for the break.

Clare had failed to score from play during the entire first-half and their wait would stretch until the 50th minute when Sexton hammered in a close range goal.

The Treaty men hit back with points from Neville and Lee prior ‘keeper Limerick O’Sullivan pulling off two saves in the closing stages to keep them right in contention.

In the dying stages, it was centre-back Iain Corbett that ensured the winning start to the new season for the hosts with his second point of the afternoon.
