Cavan champions set for Ulster duty this weekend

November 01, 2019

GOAL....Oisín O`Connell opens the scoring for Castlerahan with a goal against Ramor at the senior county championship final at Kingspan Breffni.

All three Cavan club championship winners will be on Ulster duty this weekend as they look to progress in the northern province.

On Saturday, Killinkere will try and back up their come from behind quarter-final victory over Down’s Bright from two weeks ago when they take on Blackhill (Monaghan) in a bid to reach the Ulster club junior football championship final.

Paddy Bates’s team are at even odds along with the Farney County champions, managed by Cootehill man Aidan McCabe, for the clash at Armagh’s Athletic Grounds (throw-in 5pm) and victory would see them become the county's first side to reach a provincial junior decider since Swanlinbar in 2010.

Sunday afternoon will see back-to-back senior winners Castlerahan play host to newly-crowed Donegal champions Naomh Conaill at Kingspan Breffni (throw-in 2.30pm).

The saga that was the Donegal SFC final came to its conclusion last Wednesday night when the Glenties club edged out last year’s Ulster champions Gaoth Dobhair by 0-8 to 0-7 in a second replay at MacCumhaill Park, Ballybofey.

The home side will be hoping to defy 12/5 odds against their Tir Chonaill counterparts in Cavan town and advance towards a semi-final date against the winners of Crossmaglen and Clontibret whom meet on Saturday night.

On the same afternoon, intermediate champions Laragh United face a tough trip to Omagh where they take on Galbally Pearses.

Jody Devine’s charges were 10-point winners over Belturbet in last month’s final and will look to tear up the script against the fancied Tyrone champions as they bid to become the Breffni County’s first Ulster IFC club winners since Ballinagh’s triumph in 2007.

Throw-in for that one at Healy Park is at 2.30pm.
