1,000 Mile Cycle Challenge

The club is planning to hold a fundraiser on the Saturday (May 1) and Sunday (May 2) of the May Bank Holiday weekend.

Kilbeggan Shamrocks GAA and LGFA will come together to run a 1,000 Mile Challenge with the aim of raising €5,000 for badly-needed funds for player and pitch development. From 8am to 8pm on both days outside Centra Kilbeggan, we will have volunteers cycling to meet our target of 1,000 miles. Each cyclist will be assigned their own time slot of 30 or 60 minutes, and the bikes will be sanitised after each person uses them. Social distancing will be observed at all times.

We are calling on everyone in the community to get involved. If you would like to be allocated a time slot for cycling or are available to steward either day, please contact Adrian Carroll on 087 1043068 or Shaun Pidgeon on 087 9428171.

For those away from home, you can participate in the challenge virtually and tag our social media pages to help us meet our goal. Donations can be made on our GoFundMe page, while there will be collection buckets outside the shop each day.

New Westmeath GAA PRO

Congratulations and best wishes to Marie Lynagh on her election as Westmeath GAA PRO last Thursday night.

Marie has proven herself to be a highly-capable and hard-working administrator since taking on the role of club secretary seven years ago, and now follows in their footsteps of her father Pat by joining the county committee. A former Westmeath county secretary, football board chairman and Leinster GAA treasurer, Pat is currently Leinster PRO and is still very involved with his club.

It may well be a first in the GAA to have a father and daughter as PRO of their province and county at the same time.

Condolences

The club was saddened last Friday morning to learn of the deaths of Jimmy McDonnell, Ballinderry Big, Kilbeggan and Ned Flynn, Castlepollard.

Jimmy was a former Kilbeggan player who also played football and hurling for the Westmeath club in New York, winning a junior football championship medal with the latter in 1963. He was very involved in the development of our pitch after returning from the US with his late wife Maureen and young family in the 1970s.

A superb athlete in his youth, Jimmy was a member of the inaugural Tullamore Harriers and former winner of the Leinster 10-mile road race in Enniscorthy in 1955.

Club members provided a socially distant guard of honour outside the pitch for Jimmy as he made his final journey to St James’ Church and the Relic Cemetery last Sunday.

We were also sorry to learn of Ned Flynn’s passing after a long battle with illness. Ned needed no introduction to anyone in Westmeath GAA, being a former county minor board chairman, all-round GAA fanatic and wonderful character who was noted for his sharp wit. He also gave a lifetime of service to his beloved Castletown-Finea/Coole/Whitehall and Castlepollard.

Sympathy is also extended to the Maxwell family, Emper on the death of Tom, brother of the late Fr Barney Maxwell CC Kilbeggan, last Tuesday.

Lotto

Our lotto, which has been suspended since January due to the pandemic, is set to return on the May Bank Holiday weekend. Watch this space for more details!

Underage

Our underage players have been taking part in online training sessions ahead of the planned return of non-contact outdoor training from April 26 next.
