Waterford's Shane Fives has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling at 32.

The Tourin man first joined the Waterford senior panel in 2008 but had to wait until 2013 before making his championship debut in the All-Ireland qualifier defeat of Offaly, alongside his brother Darragh.

The 2010 Munster SHC medallist started the 2017 All-Ireland final versus Galway but a nightmare time with injuries confined the talented defender to a substitute's role in last year's Liam MacCarthy Cup decider against Limerick.

Fives also won a National Hurling League title in 2010 and claimed Railway Cup honours with Munster and a Fitzgibbon Cup medal during his Waterford IT days.

His decision to retire comes just days after that of Deise defensive colleague Kevin Moran.

"Shane Fives has announced his retirement from intercounty hurling," Waterford GAA confirmed the news in a statement.

"Waterford GAA would like to thank Shane for his commitment to the Waterford senior hurling panel since 2008.

"We wish Shane, his partner Fiona and their family all the best in the future."
