The inter-county provincial pre-season competitions will return in 2022.

The GAA's Central Council met at Croke Park today to make decisions on a range of issues, including the 2022 Masters Fixtures Plan.

It was agreed to introduce the O'Byrne, McKenna and McGrath Cups and Connacht League (football) along with the Walsh and Kehoe Cups and Munster Hurling League in hurling.

The pre-season competitions were expected to be scrapped after the Fixtures Task Force Calendar Review Committee recommended bringing an end to their existence to allow for a more 'closed season' at inter-county level.

However, inter-county teams can now resume collective training on December 8 with challenge matches allowed from the start of January.
