All-Ireland celebrations in Ardboe were overshadowed by the death of a young man in a road accident just hours after Tyrone's victory over Mayo.

Father-of-two Darren Canavan (31) died on the Kilmascally Road near his home when his car left the road shortly after 3am on Sunday. Ardboe O'Donovan Rossa GAA club have paid tribute to the deceased, whose son Ethan is one of their underage players.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Canavan family at this time, particularly our youth player Ethan," the club said yesterday.

"Our ladies’ match and boys’ training scheduled for the pitch this evening have been postponed as a mark of respect."

Deputy First Minister and Mid Ulster Sinn Fein MLA Michelle O'Neill said: “The local community is devastated at the death of Darren Canavan in a tragic road accident on Kilmascally Road in Ardboe.

“Darren is well-known and respected locally, and this news is truly heartbreaking for his young family, friends and loved ones. I want to extend my deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Darren’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”
