Former Armagh captain Brendan Donaghy has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The Clonmore clubman made his senior championship debut against Donegal in 2007 and went on to establish himself as a regular in the Orchard men’s full-back line, winning an Ulster SFC title the following summer.

During Paddy O’Rourke’s stint in charge, Donaghy would captain his county in 2010 but injuries hindered his involvement in the years that followed.

His last appearance for Armagh came in the 2021 Ulster SFC win over Antrim and, speaking at the Armagh GAA All-Stars last night (Thursday), current manager Kieran McGeeney paid tribute to his player and former team mate.

"The way I look at any player is would you like to mark him when you were playing and definitely a 'no' when it comes to Brendy," McGeeney is quoted saying by RTE Sport.

"His toughness, his courage, his ability to win ball in tough situations and drive the team was second to none.

"The second metric I use is would you love to stand beside him going into battle to play any team and the answer is definitely 'yes.'

"He’s been an inspirational player since I’ve come back into the set-up in terms of how he drives the team on."
