Tyrone joint-manager Brian Dooher cited Mayo's 42nd minute penalty miss as the moment that helped swing today's All-Ireland SFC final for his charges.

Ryan O'Donoghue's missed chance to put Mayo back in front from the spot seemed to galvanise the Red Hands as two superbly-worked goals finished off by substitute Cathal McShane and man-of-the-match Darren McCurry punished the Connacht champions and ultimately handed Tyrone their first Sam Maguire Cup crown in 13 years.

"It was tight at times and probably the penalty was the big turning point in the game for us," Dooher told RTÉ Sport.

"The boys put in real effort and dug deep, [gave] everything they had to give, and in the end it got us over the line.

"The penalty was a big game-changer. We were under pressure at that time and Mayo were coming strong at us and they had a few other goal chances as well, but thankfully we repelled them.

"The defence held up again, the defence has been outstanding this year."
