A happy Kevin Dowd and Keith Callaghan after the 1998 Meath U21 FC final

Our photo was taken after the 1998 Meath Under 21 football championship final. Dunderry stars Kevin ‘Ted’ Dowd and Keith Callaghan celebrate their 2-11 to 2-8 win over Simonstown at Pairc Tailteann.

Nothing strange there except that 'Ted' was the Dunderry captain but could not receive the cup.

The midfielder was sent off towards the end of the game for a second bookable offence and because of this ruling he was not permitted to accept the cup on behalf of his colleagues.

His replacement Seamus Fitzgerald said “ it is a great honour for me to lift this cup but Kevin Dowd is the man who should be lifting it. He was very unfortunate to be sent off near the end and this is his day”.

Dunderry led at the break 1-7 to 1-2 thanks to a late Stephen Brennan goal and Eric Murray raised another green flag within a minute of the restart to put Sean Kelly’s charges in the driving seat.
