Tooreen claimed their fourth Mayo senior hurling championship title in five years by edging out Ballyhaunis on a 0-15 to 1-11 score-line this afternoon.

Inspired by ‘Man of the Match’ Cathal Freeman, Tooreen left it late to secure their 31st title here and also avenged last year’s final defeat in the process.

Playing this decider on their own home turf, Ballyhaunis couldn’t have asked for a better start after full-forward Adrian Phillips rattled Tooreen net 10 minutes in.

The first-half would be airtight throughout however, as the would-be winners pulled back points that had the sides eventually going in at the break all square at 1-5 to 0-8.

It went point for point after the restart until found back-to-back scores just before the water break.

Keith Higgins pulled back a couple of frees for Ballyhaunis but it was their opponents that had the final say with a point on the hour mark to take back the title.
