NH MAIRTIN 2-13
NEWTOWN BLUES 0-9
Nh Mairtin set up a Senior Championship final showdown with St Mochtas after easing past Newtown Blues in the semi-final on Bank Holiday Monday.
The game may have been delayed due to Covid issues but the Monasterboice side wasted no time in getting the job done at Dunleer as a first quarter blitz effectively put the game beyond doubt.
Early goals from Sam Mulroy and Eoghan Callaghan had the Mairtins seven points with less than eight minutes on the clock and there was no way back for a shell-shocked Blues after that.
As a result, the Jocks will look to retain the Joe Ward title when they travel to Ardee on Sunday November 7th to take on a St Mochtas side who will be contesting their first final.
It didn’t take long for the Mairtins to get off the mark as Wayne Campbell fired over the opening score in the first minute and four minutes later Sam Mulroy fired in the first goal from a penalty after John Clutterbuck had been fouled.
It got even better for the champions when Callaghan added a second to extend the lead to 2-1 to no score.
Ciaran Downey got the Drogheda men off the mark with two points, but the Mairtins were in no mood to relax their grip and points from Conor Whelan and Clutterbuck were followed by a stunning JP Rooney score from the sideline.
The lead was stretched to nine points soon after the water break, but scores from Ross Nally, Robert Carr and Daire Nally cut the gap to 2-6 to 0-5 at half time.
Any slim hopes of a Blues revival were brushed aside as Mulroy and Stephen Campbell kicked the first two scores of the second half.
Although Downey and Carr responded for the Blues it was only a matter of damage limitation as the Mairtins cruised through the remainder of the half with Mulroy and Whelan pointing to seal a comfortable win.
