Thousands take part in first ever Colm Horkan memorial run

February 14, 2021

Colm Horkan RIP.

Over 4,000 people turned out for the first ever Colm Horkan memorial run today, taking on either 5k, 10k or half-marathon.

A former player and selector with Charlestown GAA, Detective Garda Colm Horkan was tragically killed in the line of duty last year.

Organised by East Mayo Athletics Club, the Irish Army 62nd Infantry Group and Charlestown GAA, the memorial run was held as a virtual event this year due to the restrictions with Covid 19.

All funds raised will go towards the development of the Colm Horkan memorial pitch and community walkways project at Charlestown GAA.

The idea for the run came from members of the Irish Army 62nd Infantry Group, who are also taking to the roads at their base in Camp Faouar in Syria today in Colm's memory.

Participants will have all day to run, jog or walk 5k, 10k or half-marathon and will receive a custom made medal in memory of Colm.
