Women Referees

(Oldest Posts First)

Why are there so few women referees officiating in camogi and ladies football games?
It struck me from looking at the women's European soccer tournament that all officials were women, which of course is the way it should be.
Our home bred ladies games are almost totally male dominated when it comes to referring, lines people and umpires.
It begs the question, how has this not changed over the years. As camogi and ladies football has grown hugely but it appears to be in a time warp when it comes to officials.
Is it lack of interest? Or do women not want to get involved because they feel that they would be verbally abused by the crowd or management on the sideline. Obviously the thing to do would be for those organisations to set up training courses for women. Maybe this is already happening but if it is when will we see it on the playing fields.
Perhaps when these two bodies of women sport amalgamate with the gaa we might see it happening.
Surely in 2022 it should be common to have women referees and officials in charge at their games. It's also the case that women referee at women's rugby and women's hockey.

It's definitely nothing to do with a fear of being verbally abused by the crowd/players etc because the male referees deal with that, and sometimes worse, on a daily basis, its part of the job
Kinda like saying you don't want to become a driving tester because you're afraid people will be annoyed if you fail them.

Good question. There's plenty of referees reffing LGFA underage club matches but there are male refs too. The male referees I've seen are usually older, retired from playing, and the female referees still playing age but at that level they still need volunteer umpires, no one covers the sidelines. Tgat's a very long way from the untercounty standard. A female referee can answer your question better, I've too many theories! Would be interested to hear what they can say.

most teachers in Ireland are women I believe. They get more abuse than referees i'd say and they deal with it.
Would like to see women reffing more men's games for sure, including the big fixtures.

Maybe fellas would show a bit more respect to a female referee, they boss us around half the time anyway so we are all well used to listening to what the women are saying!!
Always strikes me there should be more women managing and officiating at the women's games.

I'm sure the usual line about there being "barriers" stopping them is used.
