Football All Stars

(Oldest Posts First)

It was a tonic to Ulster football to see so many awards coming to our Neighbours Tyrone last night. 8 all stars and Player of the Year and it could have been more.
I am sure Ronan M Name was very close as was Mattie Donnelly and Conn Kilpatrick. Had Cathal Mc Shane been fit enough to start each match theres no doubt he would have taken another and young Canavan would have run young player of the year close had he not have had an injury also. This past few years we had to watch on as Ulster only got the odd All Star. Now Ulster football is back at the top. Congratulations to all the winners and to all selected also. You all brought us so much joy watching you in what was a trying year due to covid. Thank you all.

Fair play to all the winners last night, delighted Mcgeary won POTY it was well deserved.

Ya Mcshane and Kilpatrick were unlucky as well, Mcshane probably scored more as a sub then most starting forwards and all his scores were important ones.

Who got young player of the year?

Speaking of Ulster, Laochra Gael are showing Pete McGrath tomorrow at 04:50.

Very hard to argue with the 15 overall. Glad to see Paudie Clifford get one, as it's his first. He'd a mighty year, and even in the semi-final came good late in the game vs. Tyrone.

However, I'd have picked Oisin O'Neill instead of Kennedy at MF (I even thought Kilpatrick was ahead of Kennedy). And I'd have gone for Jack McCarron over O'Donoghue in attack. But these aren't hair-raising issues, just personal observations.

Oisín Mullen got the young player award. I'll be honest, I didn't think he was great this year, but there seemed to be a dearth of other options.
Mullen played in the two routs of Leitrim and Sligo. I thought he was average enough against Galway, he missed the semi final win against Dublin through injury and didn't look himself at all in the final loss to Tyrone.

How did Kerry get three All Stars, Clifford didnt score against a very poor Cork team, they had only one real game against Tyrone and they lost that.

Tyrone win a shedload of all stars and mattie donnelly one of their best players over last few years doesn't get one. Just goes to show how good they were last year. V impressive. Fair play to them. I'd love to have seen Jack McCarron get one but was always unlikely. Has had terrible luck with injuries in his career and showed last summer how good he cam be when fully fit. Best player I seen last summer however was Rian O Neill. Has it all.

All Stars are not picked on one game, Armagh didn't get over second round in Ulster so O'Neill was an underdog to get picked.

Because the media hav a love relationship with the Clifford's, they selected Mc Curry in the half forwards to accommodate David Clifford' Seanie O Shea way ahead of the other Clifford .The O Neill lad from Armagh is the best full forward in the country with Daniel Flynn of Kildare a close second

As good a player David Clifford is I'm still trying to figure out how he got all star this year. McKenna and Donnelly very unlucky not to win one.

Every year fellas get upset by the all-star awards which let's be honest are a load of crap, an allstar won't make you a better player next year.

Nobody in Kerry will be celebrating the 3 all stars all that matters in Kerry is winning the canister.

Great lad for an advanced mark to be fair him, maybe that's why is in.. But agreed O'Neill, Flynn and Shane Walsh more instinctively off the cuff playing tougher teams would have been more worthy.

Who cares really though, political consolation prizes really, unless you've brought home a real medal.

Paudie Cliff never should have got one - Put in a good shift against Clare and man of the match against Cork but Conor Meyler put him in his pocket in the All Ireland semi final. Tommy Conroy extremely unlucky not to make the cut.

100%, very surprised Paud got 1, he had a good league and Munster championship but was poor v Tyrone.

The all stars are supposed to be judged on league and championship. David Clifford shot the lights out during the league where Kerry went undefeated. Paudie won a few man of match awards too.

Hi Summer. Everyone has their own opinion and being from Kerry I'm bound to be a little biased but the 3 Kerry players were outstanding all year. Tom Sullivan was brilliant throughout both league and championship and had McCurry in his pocket for most of game. David Clifford was sublime during the league and had one bad championship game v Cork. He sublime v Tyrone and if he had nt been injured for extra time who knows what might have happened. He scored 8 points (4 from play). Paudie was also brilliant all year and eventhough quiet in semi he still scored 2 points from play against the all ireland champions. Remember Mattie Ruane got an all star too (deserved in my opinion) and he was destroyed v Tyrone. Eventhough I'm biased I would be first to admit if I thought any Kerry player got an undeserved award. Remember all the so called experts were raving about the Tyrone defense and the Clifford's scored 6 from play against them. Tbh I don't worry too much about all stars though.
