Galway Hurling Query

(Oldest Posts First)

I usually take the trip down for the weekend of the Galway Hurling final would anyone know if there is a master Fixture list in Galway that has the date set for the final?

Semi finals this Saturday & Sunday (should have been a doubleheader for people like yourself) and the final will be Sunday 21st, presumably in Athenry.

Final will be in Pearse Stadium. This is where they have played County finals in recent years. A redicious decision bring two South Galway teams across to Salthill

Yes, 20 minutes further than Athenry! Disastrous! Handy enough drive for Shefflin all the same! ;)

For what it's worth, would be of the view myself that it would be strange if a senior county final wasn't played in the county grounds. Surely can't happen in too many places, at least where it's in a code that the county takes seriously?

Athenry is the home of hurling. Salthill is just an open, lifeless stadium, for players and supporters. Take a packed Kenny park over 3k in a 34k capacity stadium that is salthill. Players of same thought id imagine

Fair 'nuff. You lads obviously know the Galway scene far better than I do. I just happened to land into this thread earlier on because it was sandwiched in between two Wexford ones!

For me Salthill has never been suitable for hurling but particularly club games. I have gone to decent amount of club games in Athenry myself but have always stayed away from Salthill.
You'd imagine Thomas' will do enough again this year...

I think Salthill is a vastly superior venue. Better stand, better terracing, better vantage points all around, and I'd suspect (for winter fare certainly) even a better, livelier pitch.

A 'packed' Kenny Park results in numerous 'patrons' seeing 'sfa', and possibly 'getting drowned' in the process, due to inadequate covered accommodation at the venue for the inclement conditions that can arise these months.

I agree. Pearse Stadium is a fine expansive pitch for hurling with a very good surface. The refurbishment in 2001/02 when Joe Connolly was involved improved it greatly. I don't think a comparison with Kenny Park is a fair one. Both grounds serve different purposes. I played in Pearse Stadium back in the 70s and even then it was a fine pitch. I have seen some great hurling and football games there down through the years. I'll always remember the atmosphere there when Tipp came to play Galway in a qualifier, and there have been some great football games there especially between Galway and Mayo.
