VAR In GAA

Replying To bloodyban:  "Why couldn't he just lose one of his 2 or 3 challenges rather than giving the opposition a 65? That's punishment for no reason. You can be sure if the likes of James Owens got free reign as a video ref then it would be stoppages every 2 or 3 mins. Definately no to a video ref.. I agree totally with the challenge concept and let them challenge anything they want. They only have 2 or 3 challenges per game.. want to waste one on a dodgy sideline 5 mins into the first half go ahead.."
The problem is that with 10 minutes to go and he has not used a challenge then he can hold up the game three (way too many anyway) times for nothing. It is just that penalizing him if wrong might make him think twice about making bogus or marginal calls. They have it right in hockey giving a penalty for a failed call. The result is the majority are correct calls and won. The odd one is lost and the penalty results in another goal. Great deterrent that works and subsequently the game is not delayed by too many coaches challenge.

Use VAR to ban the divers and cheats, they are ruining Gaelic football and I don't want to see our game end up like soccer, one slight touch and they are rolling around like they have just been shot or had their hair ruffled.

Replying To timmyhogan:  "It wasn't just a linesman - it was an experienced referee* who has refereed 3 AIF's the last being the 2016 replay.
So lets institute VAR - the identical scene is replayed but now McQuillan (lets say) is on the line and Deegan is the TMO. DJ & the ref miss it from 10/15 yds and don't even stop play.

Deegan - top man remember*- is consulted and after reviewing decides no foul has been committed.

Now what? Ring Joe Duffy to complain while reading/hearing multiple arguments on HS and in the media claiming it was shoulder to shoulder because the 4th official said so. And he's not that kind of TMO (look at his refereeing record)/ Anybody can make a mistake/ Stop whinging etc. Case closed.

I know I won't convince you but without wishing to be rude I am in awe at your faith in human nature."

McCarthy hit with retrospective ban as Small is cleared

& Thats the GAA version of VAR/Citing committee summed up in a simple headline.
They can ban McC on the basis that the ref didn't see it but the cameras did.
Whereas Deegan/Lane couldn't be at fault for 'missing' the Small hit right in front of them so no ban.
