Do we actually watch more games between mismatched teams. Is anyone crying out for Waterford to now go on and play Cork, Kerry, Clare and Tipperary now that they've gotten hammered by Limerick? Sligo v Roscommon, Galway and Leitrim isn't all that exciting since they've lost to Mayo. The Provincials are providing the games we need of them as is, lets not drag them out any further. It's not the same as the hurling where teams are evenly matched. It's not free either. There's only really around 16-18 game weeks that can be scheduled to allow the games to be played in February to July and allow for adequate rest weekends. Let's not waste them on more provincial fixtures no one wants. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4172 - 03/07/2021 10:51:03 2355546 Link 4 |
I think you could keep the Provincials, run 2 streams to qualify for the All Ireland series. League stream 3 divisions, top 4 in 12 team division 1 to the All Ireland. Stream 2 Provincial championships, 4 champions to All Ireland. You qualify twice you're get a bye to the semifinals, qualify once and you have to play a quarterfinal. Last year you'd Kerry, Dublin, Galway and Tyrone as the top 4 from the league. Cavan, Tipperary, Dublin, Mayo Provincial champions. Quarterfinals would be: League 1 Kerry v 4th ranked Provincial champion Tipperary League 4 Tyrone v 2nd best ranked Provincial champion Mayo Winners meet in semifinals League 2 Dublin receive a bye as a Provincial champion League 3 Galway v 3rd ranked Provincial champion Cavan Winners meet in semifinals Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4172 - 03/07/2021 12:23:42 2355567 Link 5 |
Probably agree with you ok. No more mis matches. What they could do is have mini groups in the provinces, say Leitrim, Sligo, London ,NY and the winner coming out to play in the semi against Mayo, Ros or Galway. Same thing in Munster with Cork and Kerry waiting. It might give more meaningful matches. There are still people in power in the provinces who won't want to relinquish their roles. Re the hurling, I don't think all teams are matched, in Leinster, anywy. With all due respect to those coming up from J McD, they normally are no match for the Big 4 there already. It's refreshing to see 6 teams in the Leinster round robin when it starts again next year. At least there will be some competition for the two teams coming up, with the hope that they will learn from the experience of playing the bigger teams TippRed (Tipperary) - Posts: 42 - 03/07/2021 14:03:28 2355589 Link 0 |
Something like this would be a good idea. In Tipperary senior hurling they have groups of 4 competing in the senior championship, with the top 2 from each group progressing to knockout. These are joined by the 4 divisional championship winners, where the divisions are played on a straight knockout basis. Basically, there are two chances to progress. If you fail through your group, you can always come back in by winning your division. TippRed (Tipperary) - Posts: 42 - 03/07/2021 14:10:16 2355591 Link 0 |
Yeah that's fair on the Leinster Hurling. I guess the thing is that there has to be some pathway for weaker counties to progress and potentially improve their level.

Jim McGuiness has a format like this. Top 11 in the Leagues + Tier 2 champions and 4 provincial winners. League won't be reduced to 3 divisions. To make it more interesting it could be top 4 in Division 1 into the SFs and 5th, 6th plus Division 2 promoted teams + 4 provincial champions in QFs. Personally I'm not a fan of having two pathways and would rather have the competitions separate. Let the provincials be their own thing. If the Provs must be retained, it would be best to have the two-path link. With respect to the great Uls Champp, and to a lesser extent Conn, the Provs lack interest (understatement). Should we do the same as hurling ? - two Champps - but instead of Muns & Lein (effectively, the Rest) - have Ulster (9) & the Rest (23). Rest (23) - 9 byes to Rd 2, 14 to Rd 1. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2531 - 03/07/2021 19:11:07 2355704 Link 0 |
