New Wexford football boss John Hegarty says the team’s upcoming Allianz Football League campaign will be “crucial” to his team.

The Slaneysiders will be targeting promotion to Division 3 once their campaign gets underway next month and, speaking to GAA.ie this week, Hegarty outlined the importance of a productive league campaign for his team.

"It is, this is going to be the same for every manager in Division 4. The league next year is effectively our championship,” said the Model County manager.

"If you're going to progress, you need to be reassembling at this time next year as a Division 3 team. That is not saying you're not going to take the championship or the Tailteann Cup seriously. The way I look at that is before we play Laois in the championship we have 10 competitive games.

"Depending on the results of those the championship is a very different prospect. If you're going in with seven, eight or nine wins or going in with one, two or three wins - it is a very different prospect."
