Replying To FootblockREF:  "I saw them against Carrick, they were no more than average. I saw them against Ballybay, they were no more than average. Against Latton, who barely survived this season, and Clontibret were hanging on at the end. Face the facts, they had one good day on the day it mattered the most. You can point to this years final all you like but I'll be pointing at the result on Sunday week when they play a team who are actually focused on the day and not some future event."
Hilarious to read this back. I suppose Cross were focused on the Glenties/Castlerahan winners instead.

The rest of the country are now asking what people in Monaghan were asking this time last year - why did they hire Banty again?

Down v Monaghan - 4 Like(s)

Replying To Tirchonaill1:  "I hope Down can manage to win this, though I don't think it's going to matter as regards the Anglo Celt, Tyrone have shown they are back and I can't see anyone stopping them, they might even go all the way and win Sam this year, not much hope of Monaghan or Down doing that."
Oh please, Tyrone had a great performance last week but they're not the unstoppable juggernaut some people here seem to think they are.

Disappointed to lose but the main thing is we remain in Division 1, and we can now look forward to the championship without being on a downer. It was an enjoyable, high scoring game, but again I'd probably not be as upbeat about that if other results went against us. Thought the ref rode us for a few key decisions such as the penalty call in the first half where McManus appeared to be hauled down in the box. A couple of other big moments didn't go our way either, like the second Mayo goal which came directly from a poor Beggan kickout, then their third which Beggan was very unlucky to concede after a great save. But when's all said and done, both teams are where they would wanted to have been before the game - Mayo in the final, and us still in the top flight. Some fantastic scores and passages of play from both sides, and even though we lost, the way which we kept going to the end(especially being a man down) was something we can take heart from ahead of the championship. Mayo v Kerry should be a very enjoyable final next week, looking forward to that.

I'd have taken a point going in tonight, but it's an awful sickener to get it in that manner. Feels very like Kerry in the Super 8s in '18. Threw it away in the end. Dublin were chipping away at the lead, but I always felt we were relatively comfortable until the scrappy goal got them back into it(I've no idea why someone didn't just put a fist to that rather than trying to catch it), and then the momentum was with Dublin, the crowd really got behind them, and they kept pushing on. Credit to the Dubs, that's part of why they're the best in the country - no matter the game they're playing or who is on the field, they never know when they're beaten. Brutal night for a game but I thought it was decent enough considering that. Despite the sickening result I think there are certainly positives to be taken. A break next week now, so time to digest that result and prepare well for the next game. Mayo at home next, which is one we'll certainly be targeting to win and that would put us in a good position then. Alot of talk about the ref after, mostly about the time added on. To be honest I don't have much of a problem with that, there were a few stoppages during the 6 added minutes, so no surprise he added more on. I just find it a bit funny he blew up as soon as they equalised, he could have even added another minute or so on imo, such was the stoppages during injury time. Maybe that would have went for or against us, but he'd have been justified in adding more on. The biggest issue I have is the advantage which wasn't given when McManus was through on goal, I don't understand that at all.

Atrocious stuff altogether, I've no idea why we shut up shop halfway through a game. I thought people were being harsh about the setup this year and that we should give them the benefit of the doubt. I was wrong. Absolutely zero semblance of a plan on show there, we got what we deserved.

Can't believe Banty is even being talked about, what we need is a fresh voice and ideas, not going backwards.

We have an excellent free taker in McManus and he takes the vast majority of them. But if Beggan is capable of stroking them over from the 60-65m range, then I don't see why we wouldn't utilise that. He only comes up the odd time for long range ones, so it doesn't really make much difference in the end. Maybe a different story if a keeper is up and down the pitch all day.

Vinny Corey gone now aswell, 2 serious servants for club and county for almost 2 decades, and lads that you could always rely on. No shock to see them depart, but they will still be missed in the dressing room. They both played big parts in many of our biggest days in recent years - to add to the moments from Dessie mentioned earlier, I'll never forget how Vinny almost turned the game in the 2007 Ulster final when he switched to full forward at half time and nearly did enough, and then was MOTM in the following qualifier against Donegal. Also, the screamer of a goal he scored in the Kildare qualifier a few years back to get us back in the game. Always been one of the big leaders in the Monaghan dressing room, and could do a solid job whether he was asked to play in defence or attack, often tasked with watching the opposition danger man. Indeed his marking of Micheal Murphy was a big factor in our Ulster final wins of 2013 and 2015.

What more can you say about Mansy, one of the very best forwards of his era and one who would have succeeded in any era or team. Barely featured all league, comes in for his first start today in a must win game - and he racks up 1-7 with 5 from play. It'll be a sad day when he hangs them up Delighted for all the lads, but especially Vinny. It was a thankless job to take over Monaghan right now with a right bit of work and transition to do - nevermind the fact Vinny has no actual managerial experience - but he and the lads dug it out at the end. There wouldn't be many in Monaghan football who would command more respect than Vinny, and you could see that at the end when the players went to him. He has blooded an awful lot of young players, alot more than previous managers, and hopefully that will pay dividends down the line. Long way to go for him to build something new with this team, but keeping Monaghan up straight away when everyone was writing us off from the start, that's something to build on .

So proud of the lads, Galway might have had an eye elsewhere in the last 20 minutes, but a dominating win nonetheless. Let's not settle now though, a real chance of getting to an AI final now. No reason to have fear of either possible opponent.

Important win in Clones, and one which leaves us with a bit of breathing room now and one step closer to retaining Division 1 status, and we can see where we can go with the rest of the league. Twas tight enough early on, but a more clinical second half performance helped us pull away, particularly when it hit the final quarter. Still room for improvement in areas but there were some strong performances too, from Conor McCarthy especially who was excellent, along with the likes of Kearns and Boyle. A good spread of scorers which has been the case in every league game, so we've not been near as reliant on McManus as we have been in the past. Good to see us continue to add to the scoreboard late on, as points difference could play a part yet.

Monaghan V Kerry - 3 Like(s)

Replying To wfkerry:  "To be honest Monaghan are average enough couldnt beat Fermanagh beat a Kildare team who were beaten by Carlow as poor as Kerry were we were only a point behind Galway hitting 70 minutes and we were poor if Kerry improve 10% they will beat Monaghan i think Monaghan are believing there own hype that they are some kind of a super team what did MCmanus do last week not alot if Kildare had there shooting boots on they would have won"
And if my auntie had balls etc. etc. Forget about the fact that we missed loads of chances ourselves and should have been clear only for the wides. The point about McManus is also pretty funny. If he had scored 10 of our 15 pts then the tired old "one man team" line would be trotted out. But when he has one of his quieter days and we still win with other lads stepping up, then that's an excuse to bash him aswell! Can't win I suppose.

There's alot to digest from that afternoon of football, but I just can't get over those second half tactics. We ended the first half very strong and had all the momentum, but then killed it in the second half. Sure there was a strong wind, but at least try to attack through the hands the odd time, and not running into a crowd of players and getting turned over. O'Hanlon in the first half looked to really be at the races, was troubling the Cavan defence every time he ran at them. Surely he's exactly the player we should have been seeking out in the second half to use his pace. Instead he wasn't utilised at all and then substituted. I just can't understand the gameplan at all. To effectively shut up shop at half time is just mental.

That's that anyway. Alot of people called it, we haven't been at the races pretty much all year. Some lads will call it a day, and it's time for a change and a freshen up. Malachy has already announced his resignation, so at least that's clear and done, and the county board have a good while to look for a suitable replacement. Thanks for the memories Malachy. He's a man who brought many great days to this county and he owes us absolutely nothing.
