Five motions worth watching at Congress

February 26, 2021

2020 GAA Congress

GAA Congress takes place this weekend and among the 37 Motions to be discussed and voted on, we look at five that stand out.

Motion 7

This motions means that only one person can accept a trophy and the days of two or more players lifting a trophy at a presentation would be over.

Motion 12

This is the motion looking to create a spilt county and club season with the All-Ireland finals to be finished by the 29th Sunday of the Year, which is mid July. After this point there would be no intercounty  action with the remainder of the year set aside for club activities.

Motion 13

This motion would limit the number of teams in a county’s senior football or hurling championship to 16.

Motion 20

This motion aims to introduce a penalty for cynical fouls in football and for the first time, in hurling as well.

In hurling if the cynical foul is either within the 20m line or inside the semi-circular arc that extends from the 20m line and is judged to have stopped a goal scoring opportunity, then a penalty is awarded and the player who commits the foul is sin binned for ten minutes.

In football the sin bin rule already exists but a penalty will be awarded if a foul which denies a goal scoring chance takes place within the the 20m line or inside the semi-circular arc that extends from the 20m line.

Motion 25

A team is allowed to start a game with 13 players but currently must have 15 players (inclusive of sending off or players who leave the pitch injured) at the start of the second half of the game is forfeited. This motion allows a team to continue with 13 players at the start of the second half.
