David Clifford will undergo a scan on the ankle injury he suffered in the early stages of Kerry's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final victory over Mayo.

The star forward, who recovered from a calf strain to play in the game, injured his ankle after accidentally standing on the ball. But he recovered to score the only goal as the Kingdom eased to a 1-18 to 0-13 victory and a semi-final meeting with Dublin in two weeks' time.

“He jarred his ankle,” Kerry manager Jack O'Connor told gaa.ie.

“It was curtailing him and in the heat of battle the adrenalin keeps you going, but I imagine he will be very sore tomorrow.

“Obviously David was struggling through much of the first half. The boys worked on him at half-time but obviously he has an injury and, sure, look, we'll have to wait and see and get it scanned and see what's the story."

O'Connor was glad he resisted taking Clifford off earlier in the match (he was eventually replaced with three minutes of normal time remaining).

“We did, absolutely (consider taking him off). But he's the kind of a player you'd nearly give the benefit of the doubt to most of the time," added the Kerry boss, who also has injury concerns over Jack Barry (calf strain) and Adrian Spillane (hamstring strain) ahead of the All-Ireland semi-final.

"He's not just an ordinary player and he showed it with the goal he scored which was a serious goal because it came at a time when we were struggling to get scores and we were struggling to get a foothold on the game. That's the class of the man, that's what he can do.”
