Immediate return to challenge matches for inter-county senior teams

May 05, 2021

Challenge matches back on the agenda.

Inter-county senior teams have been given the go-ahead for an immediate return to playing challenge matches.

The Government previously stated that counties could arrange challenges from next Monday, 10 May, the same date inter-county travel is permitted.

In a letter sent to counties this evening, the GAA said the date has been brought forward to Wednesday, 5 May.

“Further to our earlier communication, we have received an update from Government in relation to the position on senior inter county challenge games,” the letter reads.

“The date from which these are permitted has been brought forward from May 10 and they are now permitted from today’s date, May 5.”

This will be welcome news for those counties who had provisionally organised challenges in preparation for the Allianz Leagues which start this weekend with the hurling leagues, followed by the football equivalent a week later.

Earlier today, inter-county minor and U20 teams recevied permission to resume on Monday 10 May.
