Monaghan 1-8
Cavan 1-7
Stephen Mooney’s injury-time goal saw Monaghan snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against Cavan this afternoon in the Ulster minor football championship.
Mooney struck 1-1 in the closing stages in Clones as the Farney men pulled off a comeback against their neighbours and stayed on course for a third consecutive success in this competition.
Cavan had dominated large portions of the first-half before Liam Fay’s 26th minute goal surged them towards a commanding 1-5 to 0-2 lead at the break.
Mooney kicked over the hosts’ first four points of the second-half unanswered before Cavan saw a goal from Turlough Farrelly disallowed in the 50th minute for a square ball.
It got worse for the Breffni men when Cormac Brady picked up a second yellow card afterwards and from there Mooney would bring his side within a point.
Ryan Brady and Shane Tynan (free) struck points to stop the rot for the Blues but in injury-time it all fell apart for them.
