James Crombie was crowned Photographer of the Year at the 2021 Press Photographer of the Year awards last night.

The gifted Inpho Photography snapper was responsible for putting a hurler on the moon last summer after his stunning shot on Croghan Hill in Offaly as a player soared in the air with a hurl in hand.

His impressive portfolio also included 'The graveyard shift', a fan watching the Roscommon SFC semi-final between St Brigid's and Boyle at Dr Hyde Park from a sixteen foot ladder set outside the wall of the adjoining cemetery.

"A marriage of superb features work, creative portrait work and solid sports photography" was how the judges described Crombie's portfolio.

In addition, he won the top prize in the Sports Action category for his amazing action shot during the Mayo-Tipperary All-Ireland SFC semi-final at Croke Park.

The judges said: "We saw several really superb sports entries containing fantastic action but this image jumped out as arguably the defining image of the Irish sports year – a real sense of drama is added by shooting from such a low angle to emphasise the emptiness of the huge stands behind. Sporting history is defined here."
