Offaly's Cathal Kiely

The Offaly SHC got underway last weekend when a number of close contests took place.

With four-in-a-row chasing St Rynagh’s and last year’s runners-up Coolderry both having a bye, most of the focus was on the Group 1 meeting of Kilcormac/Killoughey and Birr in Rath last Friday evening. Played in a downpour, the game was decided by a last-gasp Cathal Kiely ’65 which handed K/K a 0-17 to 0-16 victory.

In the other Group 1 tie, former county goalkeeper James Dempsey scored 0-8, while Odhran Kealy chipped in with 1-1 as Kinnitty saw off newcomers Clodiagh Gaels by 1-15 to 0-12 in Banagher.

In Group 2, Shinrone and Ballinamere played out a 2-15 to 0-21 draw in Lusmagh, while Belmont edged out Seir Kieran by 1-13 to 0-15.

In the SHC ‘B’, there were wins for Kilcormac/Killoughey, Drumcullen and last year’s runners-up Tullamore over Clara, Birr and Lusmagh respectively. The Offaly hurling championships will resume on the weekend after next.
