Leinster U20FC: three-mendous Model pip luckless Louth

Wexford are through to a Leinster U20FC semi-final with Dublin at Parnell Park

Jamie Myler’s last-ditch penalty proved decisive for Wexford, who beat Louth by 3-10 to 0-16 at Drogheda.

The reward for the winners is a semi-final clash with Dublin at Parnell Park next Tuesday after the Dubs proved far too strong for Longford tonight.

Wexford looked home and hosed when leading by 2-9 to 0-5 shortly after the restart, Michael Molloy and Sean Nolan (free) posting the first two points of the second half.

But Aidan Shevlin’s men roared back with five unanswered points between the 34th and 43rd minutes through Conor Gillespie (2), Fearghal Malone and John Gallagher (2). After Wexford pointed courtesy of Enda Minogue, the Wee County struck five more in succession to draw level by the 58th minute, Malone’s ‘45’ following scores from Gallagher (3) and Eoghan Callaghan.

However, Myler stepped forward to dispatch an injury-time penalty for his second goal to send the visitors through to the last four.

The Slaneysiders were delighted going into the interval with a commanding 2-7 to 0-5 advantage.

Myler’s fortuitous first goal had the Model Couty ahead by 1-3 to 0-2 after ten minutes. He was probably going for a point but the ball dropped to the net, much to the Wee County’s obvious dismay. Lenny Grey’s point was cancelled out by Sean Forde as the visitors maintained their four-point advantage, Meyler’s point making it 1-5 to 0-3 after 13 minutes.

The away team kicked on to lead by double scores with half an hour played and, when Ben Madddock’s dropping shot was unluckily deflected to the net by a Louth defender it meant the difference at the short whistle was a huge eight points. It went out to ten, then zero, then one.
