Leinster club JFC round-up: Kilkenny and Louth champs advance

October 27, 2018

Celebration time for Dundalk Young Irelands.

Kilkenny champions Tullogher-Rosbercon pulled off the shock of the round to dump Wexford champions Naomh Eanna out of the Leinster club junior football championship this afternoon.

The platform for the 1-10 to 0-11 victory was built by Tullogher-Rosbercon’s first-half showing at New Ross, where they carried in a four-point lead at the break.

Naomh Eanna would eat into that deficit but their Kilkenny counterparts struck a vital goal in the second-half which secured the upset.

In Aughrim, Kildare champions Milltown were 1-12 to 0-11 winners over hosts Kilcoole.

Colin O’Shea’s late controversial penalty sealed the deal for the winners in this entertaining first round encounter, which saw the Wicklow side trailing by 0-12 to 0-5 before clawing it back with captain Danny Kavanagh in fine form for them.

However, Milltown finished the stronger and saw a goal chance flash wide from sub Ian Fitzgerald before O’Shea stuck his penalty away.

In Tullamore, Offaly representatives St Brigid’s made their goals count in a 2-7 to 0-9 victory over St Vincent’s of Meath while Amsterdam’s dream season came to an end with a 0-8 to 0-6 defeat at the hands of St Finians Newcastle in Abbottstown.

Young Irelands Dundalk kept the Louth flag flying in this competition with a 1-9 to 0-9 triumph over 14-man Kilbeggan Shamrocks (Westmeath) at The Downs.

Meanwhile, in Abbottstown, St Finians Newcastle denied European champions Amsterdam a famous victory as the Dublin side ran out 0-8 to 0-6 winners.
