Garrycastle 0-12                     Ballyboden St Endas 3-14

The Garrycastle  dream of winning their second Leinster club title came to an end on Sunday in Mullingar when they lost comprehensively to Ballyboden St Endas. Fielding without the injured Tom O'Halloran  an early point from a Dessie Dolan free was soon cancelled out and then a thunderbolt struck when the Ballyboden  centre back ran through from the 45 meter line to score their first goal. The Dublin team with their tails up began to dominate in most positions and added 4 points before Dessie scored his second. A third Garrycastle point came from Eoin Monaghan in the 18th minute leaving the score at 1-5 to 0-3.  But the Ballyboden dominance continued scoring 5 more points to one each from James and Dessie Dolan. The halftime  score was 1-10 to 0-5. It was a bad half for the Castle and only for a brilliant block by John Gaffey when a goal looked on it would have been worse. Ballyboden  had pushed up very far on the Garrycastle kickout and left Garrycastle struggling to win their own ball. In addition they were finding their inside forwards with ease.

Jason Nugent  replaced Eoin Monaghan at halftime. The third quarter was Garrycastle’s best with Doron Harte, James Sheerin and James Dolan prominent in driving the team forward and Mark McCallon and John Gaffey cutting out many attacks.   Three Dessie Dolan points reduced the lead to five after 36 minutes. Points were then exchanged (Dessie Dolan)  before Ballyboden  got 2 on the trot. A Jason Nugent blast for goal was deflected over the bar by the Ballyboden  goalie.  During this period of Garrycastle  pressure a move set up by James Sheeran  and Michael Monaghan saw a shot on the Ballyboden  goal deflected clear. As well as the goals not going in  some scorable point chances also drifted wide.  Six points adrift after 53 minutes and with the Garrycastle lads giving it their all, a period of keep ball by Ballyboden ended up with a ball in the Garrycastle net.  Three minutes later the ball was in their net again which finally put the game out of Garrycastle’s reach.  The game finished with another point for Ballyboden and two for Garrycastle. It was a step up in quality of opposition for Garrycastle which proved too much but they fought to the end and can hold their heads high.  This team and management can be proud of their achievements this year which supporters are very appreciative of. It was a great run ended only by a quality team. Another milestone on the day was that this was Dessie Dolan’s last game in the green and red and the large crowd of Garrycastle supporters showed their appreciation for his great career by giving him a standing ovation when he was being replaced after 50 minutes.
