Kilbeggan Shamrocks GAA Notes

Marvellous Mairead!

There aren’t too many All-Ireland winning captains around Westmeath, but we are proud to say that our very own Mairead McCormack is one of them after skippering the camogs to a memorable All-Ireland intermediate final over Galway at Croke Park last Sunday.

With her side trailing by seven points at half-time, Mairead led a magnificent comeback with a 41st minute goal which followed a brilliant piece of fielding from Megan Dowdall’s centre. There were joyous scenes afterwards when Mairead climbed the steps of the Hogan Stand to raise the Jack McGrath Cup.

Let's hope it won't be the last silverware you win this year Mairead as we have a ladies football Division 3 league final coming up in a few weeks against Mullingar Shamrocks!

We also congratulate Mairead’s older sister Joanne, who played ladies football with us up until recently, on being part of the winning Westmeath panel. The success comes just two years after the Lake County won the All-Ireland ‘premier’ junior title and they will now, incredibly, have senior camogie to look forward to in 2020.

Centenary celebrations

We are delighted to announce that GAA president John Horan will be attending an event to mark the centenary of our first senior football championship win in 1919 on Friday, September 27.

We look forward to welcoming him to the celebration in the Parish Centre. Full details of the event will appear in next week’s notes.  While we have made contact with family members of most of the 17 players who were involved, there are still a handful to be contacted.

If you are related or know anybody that might be, please contact Marie Lynagh on 087 671 6595.

The winning panel was: Jack Guilfoyle, Frank McGuinness, Michael Lynagh, Matt Delahunty, Ned Langan, Joe Guilfoyle, Albert Ryan, Tom Bohan, John Coghlan, Bernard O’Neill, Dick Langan, Joe Dwyer, John McGuinness, Joseph Rourke, James McGuinness, Fr Pat Joe Ryan and Barney Finn.
