We travelled to Springfield on Wednesday evening to play the home side in our final group game in this years minor championship and came agonisingly close to getting the win to secure our place in the semi finals. Mullingar had wind advantage in the first half and were well worth their half time lead of 0-9 to 0-5 . If we thought the elements alone would be enough to overtake the town side we were in for a shock in the opening minutes of the second half when  Shamrocks struck for a goal and several well worked points to put them in what looked like a winning position. Indeed with just a quarter of an hour left in the game we found ourselves fifteen points down until a Jack Gallagher goal stemmed the tide and this was shortly followed by another three pointer from Darragh Seery. With Shamrocks visibly tiring and our lads playing with great abandon and no little confidence we netted two more goals from the boots of Conor Murphy and Eoin Glennon and when Morgan Gavigan pointed a beauty of a point from a huge distance deep in injury time to put us a point up the comeback of all comebacks looked on. With all present expecting the kick out to be the final piece of action play was allowed continue and Shamrocks won a free which they converted to secure a draw in what was an epic battle. There was amazing scenes at the end of this breathtaking match played in Ballinagore on Monday evening when we came from eight points down at half time to claim a one point victory. Moate started the game in a very lively fashion and their forwards were scoring at will and when they got in for their second goal just before half time it looked to be game over as they held a 2-07 to 0-5 lead at the interval. We came out with renewed confidence in the second half and with Peter Reynolds and Peter Dalton supplying our forwards with a plentiful supply of ball we gradually ate into Moate's big lead. Two great goals from Cody Finnane brought us within a point of Moate and Killian Bolger, who was having his best ever game, swung over a couple of superb points to put us in front with five minutes left. Moate then struck for a goal to put them back in front before the deadly duo of Peter Murphy and Shane Corcoran combined for a well worked goal from the latter to regain the lead.Now it was the turn of our backline to excel as they came under pressure from our opponents who went all out for an equaliser but the final whistle came to our rescue and we qualified for a place in the county final. Well done to all involved especially the management team of Conor Elliffe and Sean Claffey who stepped up to the mark with flying colours as their co manager, Olly Kirby, was missing due to holidays. The team sported their new jerseys which are kindly sponsored by Club Activ Gym, Mullingar and we thank them for their generosity.

Clothes Collection

The club are holding a clothes collection in conjunction with the camogie club on Wednesday 18th of September. We ask anyone to drop bags of clothing, boots, shoes, curtains, blankets, belts, (duvets or pilows not accepted) to the park in Castletown Geoghegan any time before the above date.

 

All Ireland Intermediate Camogie Final

St. Malachys wish local players Mairead, Joanne, Emma  and all the Westmeath camogie panel when they take on Galway in Croke Park on Sunday next.

 

Memorial Day for Mattie Corcoran

St. Malachys GFC are planning to pay tribute to one of the all time great clubmen we ever had in the late Martin (Mattie) Corcoran who passed away in 2017. The Corcoran family are still heavily involved with the club and it is planned to unveil a memorial to Mattie at 1pm on Saturday 14th of September after the Under 8's and 10's blitz which takes place in the Park that day. We will have further information over the coming weeks and it is also planned to launch our DVD , "St. Malachys, The Story So Far" which has been excellently put together by Olly Gallagher over the past few years and includes our 1981 SFC win, the 1991 Under 12 Final victory over Rosemount, Scor successes and several interviews with club members down through the years including the late Mattie.

Condolences

The club offers its sympathy to Mrs. Sally Dalton, Garthy, on the passing of her brother, Tom Geraghty late of Milltown, Rathconrath.

 

Fundraising Cycle

We are hosting a 100K, 40K and 10K family cycle on Sunday September 29th starting at the Park. Registration for the bigger cycles is €20. Registration for the 100K is at 8am and group leaves at 9am. Registration for the 40K begins at 9.10 and leaves at 10am while the family cycle will begin at 11. There will be refreshments half way through the cycle and at the finish line! Please spread the word to all your cycling friends and it promises to be a fantastic morning!
