Junior Football Championship
Garrycastle 2-11 Athlone 1-9
The junior team defeated Athlone in a keenly contested first round game of the championship, played in Athlone last week. Playing against the wind Garrycastle started strongly scoring a goal and a point by Dylan Keegan. However Athlone came back quickly and quickly levelled with a goal and a point of their own. The half was low scoring with Garrycastle getting two further points from Eoin Mulvihill and Brian McCormack to Athlone;s three points leaving Athlone leading by a point at halftime . Even though they were trailing at halftime Garrycastle showed that they could create goal chances with two good chances not being converted during the half. At the other end Mark Keenan brought off a good save to keep an Athlone shot out.
At the start of the second half the Garrycastle management brought Neil Rattigan and Ciaran O’Neill into the action. Peadar Mulvihill, Dylan Keegan and Brian McCormack added three quick points to Athlone’s one before Ciaran O’Neill came in at the end of a very good Garrycastle move to finish to the net. Further points were added by Dylan Keegan, Brian McCormack, Brain Ruane (2) and Sean Doak to Athlone’s three. During this period another Garrycastle goal chance wasn’t converted. This was a good hardworking performance by the team with some good fielding on display , especially by younger players. It also saw the welcome return of emigrants Neil Rattigan and Shane Mulvihill to the colours and newcomer John O’Brien making his debut.
