Garrycastle GAA Notes June 9

ACFL Div 1

Garrycastle 1-14 Tyrellspass 0-12

Going into this game which was played in Garrycastle last Sunday morning, the prospect of Garrycastle reaching the league final looked remote, however they duly went ahead and gained the two points to bring their league tally to 11. Results elsewhere went in Garrycastle ‘s favour with Tang drawing and Lomans losing meant that Garrycastle qualified for the league final thanks to their superior scoring difference. Getting back to Sunday morning’s game, Tyrellspass, with some help from the wind, started the stronger and held a 0-5 to 0-2 (Alex Gardiner) lead midway through the half. Garrycastle were sluggish and were losing a lot of breaks. In the second quarter there was an improvement in the home team’s play and were rewarded with points from Conor Cosgrove, Andrew Monaghan, and Alex Gardiner. Dessie Dolan’s introduction after 25 minutes helped the team’s performance. The halftime score was 0-7 to 0-5. Early points in the second half by Dessie Dolan and Eoin Monaghan levelled the scores. Garrycastle added three points from Ger Henaghan Alex Gardiner and Dessie Dolan but they were matched by three Tyrellspass points. With the score at 10 points each a long ball was knocked down by James Sheeran to Tom O’Halloran who found the net. This was the decisive score and Garrycastle finished with 4 points from ( John Gaffey, Alex Gardiner , Dessie Dolan and Tom O’Halloran to Tyrellspass. It was good to see Shane Moran making his comeback after a long injury layoff.

ACFL Div 3

Garrycastle 1-20 Athlone 0-9

The last Division 3 game of the season yielded two good points but unfortunately it was too late prevent relegation to division 4 along with Athlone. Garrycastle started well scoring three points but a purple patch by Athlone followed in which they scored 1-4 by the 22nd minute. Fortunes turned again and between then and halftime Garrycastle outscored their opponents by 0 -6 to 0-1 to leave the halftime score 0-9 to 1-5. Athlone levelled just after halftime but Garrycastle scored the next 8 points as well as a goal before Athlone scored again. In the last few minutes both teams scored 3 points each. It was a comprehensive by Garrycastle and it was a pity that their good form came so late.
