Club Iarmhí Presentation ...

At the launch of the Club Iarmhí Annual Draw on Thursday night by the President of the GAA, John Horan in the Annebrook House Hotel, a donation was made to clubs  who competed in the Leinster Championships to help with the costs involved. Mullingar Shamrocks appreciate the gesture and thank the officers of Club Iarmhí for the support.

Under-20 Development League: Mullingar Shamrocks 4-11 Tyrrellspass 3-10

The Under-20 footballers of Mullingar Shamrocks  and Tyrrellspass had an enjoyable and competitive early season run-out on Sunday morning in Tyrrellspass with Shamrocks finishing strongly to secure the four point victory. Wind-assisted Mullingar Shamrocks held an interval lead of 2-7 to 0-5 and John O'Reilly had the satisfaction of scoring the opening point of the 2019 season.

Trevor Keena then added 1-5 before Cormac Hynes (0-1), Pádraic McKenna (1-0) and Jack Kelly lent a helping hand. Tommy Ryan with some excellent kicking kept the scoreboard ticking over for Tyrrellspass. Inspired by Ryan, Tyrrellspass dominated the opening twenty minutes of the second half and edged ahead. A beautiful chipped goal from Trevor Keena and a point from the same player kept Shamrocks in touch. With Cormac Hynes showing well Shamrocks dominated the final minutes and scores from Pádraic McKenna (1-1), Jack Gillen (0-1) and Andrew Shaw (0-1) secured the victory.

Apart from those mentioned Marc Eivers defended well and Adam McCormack did some great fielding. William Adzangoa excelled but has another year to wait before he can mix it with the big boys while Trevor Keena served notice that he is ready to challenge some of the bigger boys this year. Jack Kelly and Adam McCormack won't be far behind.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Killian White; Daragh White, Marc Eivers, Cian Fox;  John O'Reilly (0-1), Jack Kelly, Andrew Shaw (0-1); Jack Gillen (0-1), Adam McCormack; William Adzangoa, Dillon Matthews, Reece Bardon; Trevor Keena (2-6), Pádraic McKenna (2-1), Cormac Hynes (0-1).

Advice for all Ambitious Footballers ...

Never give up! Kerry's victory over Dublin last weekend had an interesting side-story as Mike Quirke explained last Tuesday in his Irish Examiner column. One of the successes on the night was the performance of Gavin O'Brien in the Kerry half forward line. Gavin was making his FIRST start on a Kerry team at any level and was making the 'jump to senior inter-county off  the back of his first real year of playing senior club football in 2018.

The only time he wore a Kerry jersey before this season was standing in the terraces as a Kerry supporter. Gavin O'Brien had played no part in various Kerry Development Squads or under age teams: 'he just wasn't ready yet, and that happens', Quirke explained.

According to Quirke 'Given the over-emphasis placed on winning at under-age in the majority clubs and counties, his story is one that should give real encouragement and hope to every young person who's struggling with their club or school team or didn't make a development squad, or county minors.  ...

The moral of the story according to Mike Quirke is this 'if you are brave enough to challenge yourself to being as good as you can be it's never too late to go after something you want'.
