New Westmeath managers Jack Cooney and Joe Quaid.

Westmeath GAA delegates gave their backing to new county managers Jack Cooney (football) and Joe Quaid (hurling) at last night’s county board meeting.

As expected both Cooney and Quaid were ratified by the delegates as the county enters a new era in both codes.

Cooney becomes the first Westmeath native to manage the county in 26 years and already he has put his backroom team in place.

Former Offaly star Paschal Kelleghan will come on board as a selector and coach, while Garrycastle’s Cathal Mullin will be goalkeeping coach and Mullingar’s Joe Nangle as strength and conditioning coach.

Meanwhile, former Kildare manager Joe Quaid was ratified as hurling manager and it was announced that Raharney’s Johnny Greville would be one of his selectors.

Greville is the current manager of the Westmeath Camogie side and will remain in the role, while he also will be the manager of the county under-20 hurlers.

Quaid has also brought in Shane O'Brien as his head coach, Mike Flynn as performance analyst and Willie Banks as goalkeeping coach.

O'Brien is a former Cuala player who has coached the Kildare senior hurlers, Dublin U21 hurlers and the Oulart-The-Ballagh hurlers among others.
