Just a couple of weeks after his AFL career came to an end, Westmeath’s Ray Connellan was back lining out for his club Athlone.

Connellan was released by St Kilda’s at the end of August, having spent two years with the Aussie Rules side.

However, the Westmeath forward wasted no time in returning for his club and lined out at full forward in their county SFC clash against The Downs.

There was no fairytale return for Connellan even though he kicked 0-02 as The Downs ran out victors by 3-12 to 0-12.

The winners were inspired by another county footballer as Luke Loughlin scores 1-05 in a man of the match performance to see his side through to the quarterfinals.

For Athlone, it is a must win game for them this weekend as they take on Killucan with a defeat for the south Westmeath side seeing them relegated to Group B next year.
