ACL Division 1

St Lomans Mullingar 1.09 Athlone 1.05

St Lomans travelled to Pairc Chiarain on Friday night last for the second round of the Division 1 League as Athlone played hosts. A cold evening on the weather front but a super-hot first half performance from the blues most notably Shane Dempsey seen the blues looking out of sight at half time.

Shane Dempsey was the player of the game doing irreversible damage in the opening thirty minutes clocking up a tally of 1.05. Things might have been different had it not been for a wonderful Stephen Gallagher save to deny the home side after just two minutes. A quick brace of points from Dempsey sent the blues on their way with Paul Sharry provider for ones of these with an exquisite pass. Dempsey added two points from acute angles soon after while Ken Casey added a score of his own to see the blues five points to the good.

Athlone got their first score heading into the second quarter but St Lomans were free flowing as Conradh Reilly set up Shane Dempsey for a goal chance and the blues corner forward made no mistake burying to the net. Paul Sharry added arguably the score of the game with a left footed effort 50m out from goal before Conradh Reilly got in on the act with a point after wonderful link up play with Kelvin Reilly. Neil O Toole showed huge determination and made a goal line block to deny Athlone a goal once again. The hosts added a point before the final say of the half went to Shane Dempsey who kicked another point to leave St Lomans 1.08 to 0.02 up at half time.

St Lomans needed every bit of their nine-point lead in the second half as Athlone began a revival and three unanswered points in the opening five minutes of the half reduced the deficit. The blues really knew they had a game on their hands when Athlone buried a shot to the roof of the net midway through the half which left a nervy finish in store.

Shane Dempsey added to his tally in what would be the final score of the game. Athlone were reduced to fourteen players when they lost Jordan Marshment to a black card offence while he'd already been on a yellow from a first half tackle. David Windsor was unlucky not to raise the green flag when his effort hit the post after been set up by substitute Daniel Sheridan. The blues defended well in the closing stages and held on for a four-point win.
