A win in the Munster SFC would be a huge boost for Waterford football, according to their manager Benji Whelan.

The Déise begin their provincial campaign on Saturday evening when they take on Clare in Cusack Park, Ennis.

There is no doubt that Clare are overwhelming favourites to record a win in this one, but Whelan feels that if Waterford carry the confidence they gained during the NFL into the clash, they have every chance of causing an upset.

“That’s what we’re after first of all that first win,” Whelan stressed to the Waterford News & Star.

“Who knows what can happen then. There’s a lot in this group. They’re a very capable bunch. I’d like to see them play with a bit more confidence.

“The confidence came as the league wore on. Now it’s about trying to recreate that level of confidence within the group. If the group can play with confidence, they can play really stylish, free flowing, speedy football and that’s what we want.

“Winning breeds confidence. That’s what it’s all about. It’s very hard to have one without the other. It’s about a performance in Ennis and hopefully that will give us the confidence we need.”
