Former Roscommon footballer Cathal Compton will line out for New York against Mayo this weekend and he admits that the Exiles will be up against it on Sunday.

New York have run a Roscommon side that included Compton and Leitrim close in the Connacht SFC in recent years.

However, they are firm outsiders against Mayo this weekend and Compton told the Roscommon Herald that it was difficult to argue with the odds.

The midfielder added that New York are not as strong as other years with some players not committing to the squad this year for various reasons.

“I suppose the view is that New York aren’t as strong as in other years. The turnover of players has been huge. There are plenty of talented footballers over here but they’re just not involved this year for one reason or another,” said Compton.

“It’s not hugely competitive at club level. I got asked into the New York panel at the start of the year but I wasn’t really interested as I needed a break. But I came in around two months ago.

“I suppose I’ve learned that it’s a huge commitment for these New York players. I use to think that the commitment was huge to play for Roscommon but you get well looked after.

“Over here, you’re essentially training for just one game. You’ve no league or challenge matches. You’re depending on in-house games.

“You never know what will happen on any given day but expectations aren’t crazy over here to be honest. We’ll just try and stay in the game for as long as possible and see where it takes us.”
