Thomas McCurtains club notes

September 10, 2019

There was plenty of Championship action to be had at the weekend. There was hard fought wins for our Intermediate Footballers and Senior Hurlers in the Championship while the Reserve Footballers suffered heartbreak in the Semi Final on Sunday.

On Saturday the Footballers had a tough battle against a determined St Brendans side on the back pitch in Greenford. The Macs started well but conceded a goal early on when a low shot caught the defence unawares and snuck in at the near post. The Macs hit back late in the first half though. Brendans thought they had got another goal in the lead up to half time but the referee waved play on and in the ensuing chaos McCurtains worked the ball up the field to Danny Ryan on the edge of the parallelogram who squared it to Marcus Clarke and he duly put it the back of the net. The second half was a cagy affair with a late McCurtains scoring surge making sure they got the win. That win sees them qualify for the Semi Finals against Éire Óg which will be played next weekend.

Sunday saw the Hurlers face off against Sean Traceys in the Senior Championship in a sunny Ruislip needing a win to get themselves back on track. They started the brighter and raced into a 3 point lead but conceded an early goal when a Traceys forward latched onto a loose ball in the middle of the square. However it didn't take long for the Macs to regain the lead. Sean Costelloe rose highest to pluck the ball from the sky and fired home from 25 yards out. Both teams were finding scores hard to come by but the Macs made the best of their efforts in the third quarter to open up a six point lead thanks in part to a wasteful Traceys attack. Fantastic defensive efforts in the last 10 minutes saw McCurtains close the game out easily in the end.

Later that afternoon the Reserve Footballers were unlucky to loose out to an experienced North London Shamrocks side in the Semi Finals. The lads played some fantastic football throughout the match but couldn't break down a dogged Shamrocks defence. There were great displays from all involved and a huge thanks to their commitment over the season.

Also in Greenford on Sunday the Ladies lost out to Parnells in the League and the Underage Hurlers had an enjoyable day at the Fr. Murphys blitz.

Next weekends action sees the Hurlers continue their Championship campaign in the Scrubs against Brothers Pearse on Saturday while the Footballers play Éire Óg in the Intermediate Championship Semi Final in Greenford on Sunday. These are two massive games and all support is needed.
