Thomas McCurtains GAA Club Notes

July 17, 2018

There was a mixed bag of results for the club over the last week. On Tuesday there was a great win for our Hurlers over St Gabriels in the League and the U15 Footballers lost out to St Clarets in the Championship Semi Final while Thursday saw the Intermediate Footballers overcome St Clarets in the League. The weekend was a busy one with our underage teams in action at the All Britain Competitions. The Camogs were unfortunate to loose out to John Mitchels in the Championship Semi Final on Saturday while the Reserve Footballers had a tough game against North London Shamrocks on Sunday.

Next week its off to Greenford with the footballers playing a crucial league game against St Brendans on Tuesday before the Hurlers kick off their Championship campaign against St Gabriels on Wednesday. The weekend sees the Hurlers play the McCullough Cup blitz in Ruislip on Saturday and the Footballers play their final league game against Tara in Cayton Road on Sunday.

Well done to Catherine Barrett, Claire O'Sullivan, Avril Kilkelly, Bríd Murphy, Shona Roche & Kathryn Canavan who represented McCurtains for the London Ladies against Kilkenny. They are up against Antrim in two weekends.

Underage:

Our U11 and U15 Footballers took part in the All Britain Competition in Greenford on Saturday with the U11s making the Plate Semi Final and the U15s making the Shield Semi Final while on Sunday it was the turn of our Underage Hurlers. Huge congratulations to all the management and players on a fantastic season.

Camogie:

The Camogs travelled up to Birmingham to play John Mitchels in the Semi Final of the British Intermediate Camogie Championship. The girls played some excellent camogie in the first half and were unlucky to go in at the break three points down 0-06 to 3-03. It wasn't to be their day as Mitchels came out stronger in the second half and never gave up their lead. It is a great testament to the girls as they never gave up and kept battling until the final whistle. Huge thanks to management team Martin J Brennan, Jimmy Byrne, Eoin Kelly, Paddy Coman and all the girls for their time and commitment throughout the season.

Mens Hurling:

A hard fought win for the Hurlers on Tuesday in Goodmayes kept McCurtains in contention for a place in the League final. Both teams struggled to get a stranglehold of the game in the first half. Early goals from Alan Clancy and Mark Russell were almost immediately cancelled out by two of St Gabriels own in a frantic opening 15 minutes. Kieren Dowling got McCurtains third with a lobbed shot before half time which saw them lead by five at the break.

A man of the match performance by Dowling in centre back laid the foundation for the Macs second half as they kept Gabriels to two scores during the half hour scoring 1-07 themselves.

Mens Football:

The footballers had a great win over St Clarets on Thursday evening. Clarets had the better of the opening stages and lead by 6 points to 3 after 20 minutes before a Tom Keane goal got the Macs back into contention. both teams traded scores before Conor Murphy bagged his first of the match and the Macs lead by four at half time.

The second half started brightly for the McCurtains and they stretched their lead in the opening stages. St Clarets stayed in touch thanks to two well taken points but when Paddy Halligan slotted home a penalty on the 20 minute mark followed shortly by Murphys second goal their hopes of a comback faded.

Reserve Football:

Our second team travelled up to Tottenhall on a sweltering Sunday afternoon but unfortunately they came accross a very strong North London Shamrocks side. Playing down the hill and with the breeze the Shamrocks started very well and raced into a sizable lead by the time the first water break came about. McCurtains started to come into the game and had some nice plays but struggled to find their shooting boots against a strong wind.

The second half was a brighter and points from Kevin Delahunty and Cahir McBrearty got McCurtains on the front foot before Richie Browne reeled back the years with a goal and a point. Huge congratulations to all the players especially the three young lads, Bradley Mannus, Finn Spence and Nick Clare who made the step up from the underage and made their senior debuts.
